Demagnetizing a Sony monitor?

I have had this for a while, and would like to put it into use...but....


Trying to demag it with my tape eraser has done nothing. is it even possible to demag something that damaged, or do I just need bigger tools?

Sometimes with those monitors, they get exposed to heavy magnetism and the shield around the CRT also becomes magnetized - which effects the CRT as you see it. Its a massive PITA to get the shield off and demagnetize it.

Sadly, the shadow mask can also become distorted and have the same effect if the monitor was dropped.

You might try a real degaussing coil. They can be had for fairly cheap and cover a broader surface area. A must for sets without auto degauss or that have been heavily magnetized.

I'd try the real degaussing coil first before you start playing with the magnets.

I'd check the solder connections under the degaussing thermistor (black cube; about 1/2" tall, near where the degaussing coil plugs into the board). VERY common to have that go cold, and it will energize for a picosecond in stead of the full second or so, which will actually magnetize and not demagnetize the tube.

Also it could be that the yoke has slipped due to a rubber wedge falling out. Check to see if the yoke pivots up & down or side to side.

If that isn't it, you can try the others' suggestions, but I'd refrain from using the magnets if at all possible. If you do have to go that way (ONLY, ONLY needed when the tube's been dropped), you need to unplug the degaussing coil or the new magnets will be weakened after while. When I do the magnet trick as a last resort, I first set the purity as very best I can, which minimizes the magnet needs. The procedure is easy for someone who has done it, but I can't say it's so easy if you haven't. Definitely let us post a procedure for you if you will be fooling with the purity for your first time, or you might create a monster.

Large, TV Repairman type degausers are still available and are a good tool to have.

It was definitely dropped at some point or another, but the Video Tech that I got it from said that the magnetization happened before it was dropped, and he had no reason to lie.

Definitely dropped...that damage is obvious. my videotech friend should be able to help with that one. I'll open it up tomorrow and have a look.

I have a lead on one. Fairly far away, but I really want this to be my daily watcher, because I can rackmount it
