Headscratcher on the Bay
Ok, this neat old 10" Westinghouse showed up on the bay... Perhaps it has a somewhat optimistic starting bid, but I have never seen one of these in the flesh.
http://cgi.ebay.com/1949-Westinghous...49012872262581 The headscratcher part is that the set is shown displaying a bright vertical line... how can that be... usually if there is no horiz sweep, there is no HV. Oscillator HV supply? Mains HV supply? Yoke turned 90 degrees? What is happening with this set? ![]() I am not associated with this auction, jr |

I'm away from my books right now, but I have seen that screen associated with loss of horizontal sweep in troubleshooting examples. Definitely for oscillator type HV supply, perhaps others . . .

Hi!
Vertical lines are not very common that is true. I guess it could be a shorted horizontal discharge capacitor or an opened deflection coil. If the set was stored in a basement with high humidity the seller had real luck that the HV transformer is still alive. Everybody should know not to plug these sets in directly after they were found ![]() Kind regards Josef |

Apparently, these old Westinghouse sets were known for this. "It was a common trouble that occurred in 20-year old Westinghouse TVs which had a separate high voltage supply. That way, even if you lost your horizontal oscillator, you still had high voltage." (quote from - "101 TV troubles from symptom to repair")

That Westinghouse is a RF high voltage power supply set. Sams 99A-14. Rather uncommon is sets larger than 7".

and the thing is, nearly every "modern CRT RPTV" has the separate horiz/HV setup. But of course, there are saftey circuits that go hand in hand between the 2 circuits so if one drops out, they both drop out.
