Time to turn the set on its side if you don't want to hassle with the cage. A good 50w pencil tip iron and some decent quality solder should do ya. You could probably use a soldering gun if you were careful. Probably the most important thing is to carefully scrape the wires with an exacto. You might also want to burnish the surfaces of the solder point. Anything to make the solder stick easier and make less of a chance of overheating the leads waiting for the solder to stick.

oh --and another thought:

If this set was in a shop to be fixed it may be that the fly wires were removed due to a problem in the HV circuit and they didn't want the liability with the customer if he ever picked it up. I'd give the windings a quick ohm out.

I got it fixed, well. I got 10kv and about half width. I think its a replacement flyback and its hooked up incorrectly. I need the sams to go any further.

Make sure the leads you soldered, and all the others coming from the FBT are making connection.. Possible you are off on a few windings?

Cathode current is low, 175ma. This is going to be a challenging one to get going.

from the photo of the flyback it looks like it may be the original flyback because the solder connections are "balls" on the terminals.
Have you checked the screen voltage on the horizontal output tube? I remember Admirals had a problem in this area. This could explain low output current.

Its fixed. Turned out to be one of the wires was broken off at the flyback coil side. It was very tough to solder to the nub but its working right now.

Not real good. There is allot of drift in just about everything. Color, tint, tuning, convergence, focus, purity etc. I think it has a bunch of hours on it and its just tired. Its watchable just not one of the better ones. Its back out in the garage now, time to start on something else

Did you ever plug in that horizontal chassis solid state Zenith console that I talked you into taking?

Yea, the focus resistor thing is bad. Other than that It looks good. I haven't touched any of the consoles yet, been on the table top sets mostly. The first console I want to get into is the zenith 25cc50.

Replace that focus resistor and the HV tripler with an ECG526 tripler. This tripler has the focus resistor built in and will give less trouble. Also, replace those white caps on the flyback with orange drop HV caps. After that, you'll have a good set.
