JVC Multisystem TV circa 1984

I got this tv last week along with the Chromacolor.... it's actually a nice little set...has a Toshiba Blackstripe crt (13") [off topic: what exactly makes a Blackstripe tube special? Is it just the phosphor tinting?]

This set can tune in SECAM, and NTSC 4.43 (and of course 3.58)....50/60Hz compatible 105-160VAC....has an IR remote.... Inside, it is darn solid for a mid-80s set...the PSU board is off to the side with a bunch of relays and the circuitry for the on-screen display.

So far all I've done to it is touched up the greyscale and put a North American plug on it.

On the front, it proudly proclaims "7 System" on the control door.... Anyone else have one of these?

"Blackstripe" was their term for a black matrix tube with striped phosphors and in-line guns.

Blackstripe is Toshiba's trademark for "black matrix"

Basically, there's a stripe of black graphite between the actual phosphor stripes, instead of the bare aluminium of conventional tubes, to eliminate reflections

a note: I have heard of some European tubes that actually had bare aluminum showing, but I think most tubes either had the whole face covered with phosphors or had black matrix.

In fact, most European color CRTs had bare aluminium showing between the phosphor stripes or dots,
Philips continued to make them this way until the mid noughties when they finally quit making CRTs.

Early videocolor 110° short neck PIL CRTs had their phosphor stripe pitch increasing dramatically at the sides of the screen (to facilitate purity) and they had a ridiculous amount of shiny bare aluminium showing between the stripes!

Digging an old one up, but... I've been using this tv again quite extensively in the shed...with a Zenith DTV converter (does the job I guess/had to set up an attic dipole and bowtie network) and this JVC is a pretty unique design from what I can tell.

An example of this is that the raster is totally blanked, with sound, if you hold down the power button while it's on. It won't actually commence shutdown until you lift your finger... Same thing happens at power-on: the horiz oscillator frequency doesn't stabilize until you lift your finger on the button.Never seen this on any other set.

In addition, the OSD circuit has some type of pot marked 'vision +/-' and when you adjust it, the letter size changes slightly. WTF?

But the main thing is that it looks good. Those blackstripes are damn good from what I can tell..(this is my third...used to have a 1980 toshiba blackstripe 19" ultrasonic remote, and now I have an offbrand 13" with a blackstripe crt.)
