Rescued Something Different
I was wandering around an abandoned amusement park this Sunday, and I was marveling at how fairly well the park had been preserved. They had several auctions over a year ago to clear out what rides could be saved, but things like the rollercoaster and haunted house have been left to rot. I was wandering through the tall grass, picking up older style soda cans and bits like that, when I ventured into the chicken shack and found a 10" black and white set on the earthen floor.
It looked like my first tv: a solid state set, nothing very special. I left it there and walked around a bit more, and something in me decided to go back and get it. I was glad I did, as when I looked through the grille in the back, I could see a horizontal sweep tube, so I knew it was a hybrid. Turning it onto its side, a lot of muddy water poured out of the thing. The chicken shack sits on a floodplain, and much of the park had been ruined by the flooding creek. The shack had been moved off of its footers, and this tv was submerged for awhile. I got it back home, and for the heck of it, plugged it in. I got a raster, so I pulled off the back and began to clean the controls. I was surprised: this is an all-tube set! It boasts 11 tubes-I wasn't aware that something so "modern" looking would be still all tube. After a quick spritz with contact cleaner, and it plays perfectly. I had to adjust the horizontal sync once, and that was it. I can't believe this plays so well. This is a Sharp model 2k-39. Click-stop VHF and continuous UHF tuners. Could anyone give me a manufacturing date for this thing? Edit: Sorry, I can't seem to be allowed to upload photos at this time. Just imagine any run-of-the-mill black plastic 70's 10" B&W and you'll have it.

Can't help with the manufacturing date, but it sounds like you had a lot more fun than I did today. Abandoned amusement park -- perfect setting for a zombie movie!

You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din. Wouldn't go into one of them places for all the Tea in China. Not even if there were rumours of 12 new CT-100s there....Well, maybe for CT-100s, but...(grin)

Don't forget that "Sharp" made the 1st tv's in Japan (both black and white and color).

That's better-I can finally resize files (for some reason our new Mac has no photoediting software that allows you to resize an image???) so the VK server doesn't choke when I upload giant photo files to it...

Saving the TV is nice, but I would really like to hear that someone could save the roller coaster. THOSE are really endangered now, certainly the wooden ones. What was the name of the park?
