Sony Trinitron MTV?

I can't tell if this is one MTV gave away or the guy is selling it as LIKE the one MTV gave away. pretty expensive to me

Hard to tell from the way the ad was written... Nice set, but the top of the Sony line in that era IIRC, was a larger version that had a 30 inch trinitron tube in a very stunning hand rubbed burl cabinet, that sold for $10,000.

Anybody got one? or a link to a picture?

In the first part of the ad "BOUGHT in '82"... I think they're carefully wording it to sound like it was awarded by MTV.

That's a great Sony, and I've fixed a lot of those over the years. It has a removable glass top, and it had the most advanced features of any TV at the time, including the first on-screen bar graph display for all of the adjustments. And as jr tech says, it was the little cousin of the $10,000 KV-3000R 30" set with electric tambor doors.

Unfortunately for the seller, I'd be shocked if the KV-2648 sells for any more than $50.

I guess it's possible M-TV gave those away but I don't remember anything like that. Anayway M-TV had been on the air for about six months or so by 1982. For that price I'd want to know how good that CRT is. Sony's have a way of having weak tubes.

Notice that there are no screen pictures? I too was thinking the tube is probably soft since it looks like a daily driver. $1175? I want to avoid what they're smoking :P

Now on the tube, I found out about a year ago that Sony no longer sells the upgraded version of the 26" tube. They knew there was a big problem with the 710AB22, so they came out with an improved one in the early 90s. They sold it at cost, which was very polite. It was about $166, if I recall. I think it was an A67JHG00X, or something like that. So your only hope would be to get it rebuilt, or find a good used one.

It would have to be good stuff to come up with a price like that and if I had to reuild or get a used CRT ugh I would want even better stuff to ease the pain lol

Well, he tried it at a bit higher price, last year, with no response...maybe 2010 will see it sell...or not!

Interesting. About 1993 or so, I tried to "fix" one of the early 26" Sony sets-it was the white plastic one, KV2643R or KV2644R maybe. This was before I knew how easily Trinitrons went bad (other than all of the drifting problems with the KV25XBR). I did figure out it was a bad CRT, though. I called Sony and gave them the part number, and the cost they gave me was $375 if I remember right. For $166, it might have been worth replacing.

I know the set... Chrome pedestal on wheels, and white cabinet? KV-2644R. That was the first year of the 26" Sony.

The replacement upgrade tube had a different part number, and you had to ask for it by part number (8-xxx-xxx-xx). I installed dozens, and maybe even over a hundred of them during that time, as it was easy to get a $300 estimate approved on those sets back then.
