Tuning up my 1966 Motorola Color set.

Since I couldn't unload this turkey...err I mean sell this fine set to any one I decided I might as well try to tune it up and get it running better.

Half the small tubes are shorted or weak! the CRT appears to check like new now though, the socket on my tester was a little flaky but holding it tight on the tube based made all three guns test high in the green. Thankfully the 6JS6 is a Raytheon replacement and tests good.

Spent some time cleaning this today, it was a smokers set.
I just blew off the chassis with compressed air, I'd really like to give it a bath but don't want to spend that much time with it.

Cleaned inside the cabinet with spray cleaner and rags, horribly, horribly filthy, did as well as I could without taking it apart, looks pretty good.

I replaced 8 tubes with stock I had in my caddy, the only one I didn't have was a 6DX8.

Sprayed all the controls & tube sockets with DeOx, put the cover back on the tuner, it was off when I got it.
Repaired the cracked-in-two VHF dial with super glue.

The worst problem I found was a peaking coil that had fallen apart, the round coil part was actually hanging below the cabinet where it had fallen through the vent holes, one end of the wire was broken off, I don't know what function it affects but it couldn't be good to have it busted.
I repaired it but it's missing a few turns of wire.

I washed the yoke with soap and water, the set fired up but i hear a slight sizzle so I'll have to let it dry for a few days before doing any more work on it.

The zip ties on the convergence assembly are my doing, it was originally held together (factory) with some type of tape, long since deteriorated so that was the quick fix.

I'm interested to see if you can make it produce a good picture. I've heard that the moto sets with the 23" tubes weren't the greatest as far as colors go.

I also think this chassis and set was used in Art Margolis' book "the practical guide to TV repair" - boy did I learn alot from that book when i was a kid!
