It's probably caps, a bad vertical IC, or both.

ROHS strikes again!

Last one I had was just bad solder joints on the IC. These sets use "no lead" solder which causes lots of problems!

Check the G2 voltage from the flyback and make sure it varies as you adjust the control. If it does not, you have a bad flyback or you might have possibly forgot to solder the G2/focus ground lug on the underside of the flyback to the PC board.

If that checks out, measure the B+ voltage to the video output stages. It should probably be at least 200 V. If not, suspect an open resistor or a bad cap in the B+ line.

what kind of voltages am i looking for when i measure the G2 line? reason i ask is i dont have an HV probe. just a basic multimeter. but i know when i turn the G2 pot, it washes the retrace lines AND picture out way too far and i have to turn the pot all the way back to the left before the picture pops back in, but too bright with retrace, however i DO have a picture and is readable.
