'83 Emerson - Videokarma.org TV - Video

Got this '83 19" Emerson color TV from the repair shop. This is one that they had been trying to sell for the past 5 years. Finally, an old man bought it. After a couple weeks, the flyback started burning. He brought it back to the shop and they ended up giving him credit towards a newer TV and gave me the old one.

By looking at the chassis, I can tell that it was made by GoldStar. The label on the back says it was distributed by E.E. Corp. of Natick, Mass. This is the oldest solid state Emerson color set that I've seen. Up to now, the oldest has been the ones with the Orion built side mounted chassis and the goldstar chassis sets of the mid to late '80's. These newer sets had an Emerson Radio Corp. address.

The guy at the shop told me that when this set worked, it had a better picture than most of his later model stuff. I did check the CRT and it's very strong. I may replace the flyback if I can find one and the price is right.

The oldest Emerson SS I've seen was a 1985 one with the Goldstar chassis like you describe. It had a marvelous picture on it but it got tossed along with it's 1986 13" cousin which was dead as a doornail. Both were from my grandmother's house and got thrown out after she died....in the pile was also a late model Panasonic and some other junk like microwaves, etc.

Try putting the model number of your set into a parts website, may get one cheap.

I wonder what the "old man" was watching that made the Flyback blow up...

I wonder if the "Viagra" post-it-note on top had anything to do with it

EC19X? ECR19X? What is the model number - I've got a ton of service tips for Emerson I can pass along. Subsequent models got a higher number for the "X" EC19, EC191, EC192, EC193(and suffixes), EC194(and suffixes)...
TC series sets came along in the 1990s.

I remember an earlier Emerson 13" portable with 13 or 15 channel select pushbuttons on top. There was a 330K ohm resistor that would open and leave it stuck on one channel. Fixed quite a few of those before reporting for boot camp in 1984.

I can be of no help with the flyback - got rid of those last year.
