Got a 1980 13'' xl-100 today with the ctc-96 in it. CRT=13VAUP22

Very unique portable for its time IMO. What do we know about the ctc-96? i'll post a pic soon too...

The red gun is kind of weak and I had to turn the green way down to set greyscale properly. This of course being an inline gun crt from 1980 I wasn't very surprised. But it is razor sharp nevertheless and is a high quality set.

If you had no Red, I'd have suggested an open coil in the drive circuitry. The one in the green circuit (L6) opens quite often, leaving you with nice magenta pix. There is a similar coil in the circuitry for the other two guns, but you do have some red, so that's not likely the culprit. Only other gripes I've seen on those little sets was the focus resistor would open, leaving you with inop focus.

Great little sets - Dad was approached by RCA about becoming an RCA dealer in 1980 - he'd have to take delivery of a minimum of 96 TVs a year. His price for 13" color portables was about 40 dollars higher than what one of the local "mega-dealers" here was selling them for. Not a great way to woo independent dealers, but great for the consumer!

I have one identical to yours, but from 1978 and it's a CTC-87.

I agree it is a high-quality set. Mine has the best picture of any TV in the house; maybe the best picture of any color set I've owned.

I'd like to know what the difference is between a CTC-87 and a CTC-96.

I've had a few of those sets and one or two with the one knob varactor tuner. Those are great sets that produce a very nice picture!

The tube actually seemed to come around after an hour or so..... It is VERY strong now. Since it was kind of dirty it might not have been on in a very long time. Been playing for the past 3 or 4 hours and after ONE more touchup of the controls it is truly excellent.

Thought I'd throw one more on-shot up.... It actually came around so much that the high contrast picture overloaded the crap out of my cheap camera!

Glad she came around, I agree that these are great sets. I had one a while back but gave it away. It was a '78 with the CTC87 chassis. I fixed it and put it out for free.

The only thing that's less-than-perfect now seems to be the tuner. At first it was drifting slightly after a half hour or so, but I narrowed that down to the AFT circuit. Since It's on channel 3 or 4 with a converter box, I fine tuned manually and it is stable. I did however have to turn down the sound input level from the IF box since it was overloading. Happy as a clam with it now !!
