Old TV Recycling Efforts

I have seen the mention of recycling efforts for old and/or ntsc televisions, along with reports that charities, thrifts and garbage collectors/dumps will no longer accept these sets in some areas.

Would anyone explain these "recycling centers" to me or point me to an explanation elsewhere? Who runs them, are they subsidized, and if so by which level of government?

I'm curious since there are no such programs that I am aware of anywhere close to New Orleans.

Thanks Phil, but that publication is mostly a directory of scrap yards & a few thrift stores. And in true N.O. government fashion, some places didn't exist when they printed it.

Heck, I've probably recycled more old radios & TVs than 90% of the places listed.

I am more interested in the government-mandated recycling of televisions in some areas and how those programs work.

I haven't heard anything recently. What they do locally: four local counties go together as far as waste disposal, operating a landfill, etc. Once a year they hold an event to take in hazardous waste, old tires, and old electronics. Each year it moves to a different one of the four counties. For that one day you can bring in stuff for free.

I had met the director of the program before so I finally contacted him and asked about the possiblity of rescuing vintage equipment. He was intrigued, but so far nothing has come of it. Mostly, I think, because there is very little "vintage" that shows up at these events. For one thing, they will not take anything with a wooden cabinet. That was his main topic of discussion with me. He really wanted to find someone who could take all the consoles in the counties; I get the feeling that if I put together the right proposal I could be that person, but the visions of all those 90s Zeniths and RCA's, well, it makes me dizzy!

Each county does set its own policy regarding accepting sets at the dump. I hadn't seen any TV's at the collection site here in town for awhile, and assumed they wouldn't take 'em. But Friday I rode by and they had a 27" BPC set sitting on the ground. I actually stopped in there, not for that model but for one looked like a small console stereo. (turned out it was just a nightstand)
