Philco's BIG BOY 38-690

I don't usually find myself in this forum, but antique radios were my first passion when the collecting bug bit, and every once in a while something special comes along and I have to scratch that old itch again. This time it was a deal I couldn't refuse on a 1938 Philco 38-690. I bought it from the second owner, whose brother-in-law was the original owner.

The set looks to be complete and in pretty decent cosmetic condition except for some sun damage to the right side of the cabinet. Electronically I'm not sure since I didn't plug it in and have no intention of doing so until I at least replace the electrolytic caps. I intend to give it a full restoration replacing all of the block condensers (restuffing the original blocks) and replacing any bad tubes or out of tolerance resistors. I think the cabinet will come around nicely with some cleaner, wax, and elbow grease.

I already have a Philco 37-690 and the performance in nothing short of amazing. The most interesting (and impressive) aspect of these particular units is the "High Fidelity" function of the AM tuner. It uses a variable or expandable IF section to increase the high frequency response of the radio. When operating properly is almost sounds like an FM radio. Along with the improved radio frequency response the set also includes two 5" tweeters and 4 Acoustic clarifiers that today we know as passive radiators. It also boasts a 15" woofer and a relatively high power amplifier of about 15 watts.

I'm really looking forward to digging into this radio. It's been a while since I worked on a nice Philco like this one.

What a find! The cabinet looks to be in great shape. Just a little dusty.

Looks like you'll be busy for awhile.

Now I have to wipe all the drool off my keyboard. The 38-690 is the Holy Grail of Philco collectors.

I saw one website a few years ago from a Toronto resident who picked up a 38-690. In Toronto, they occasionally have "big garbage night" where you can put out your bulky stuff, and there was a 38-690 at the side of the road. He took it. Wish I had gotten there first!
