Got a few sets today
from a fellow Ak member.
1970 Sony KV-1201 working well after a thorough cleaning of the controls and cabinet (smoker's set apparently). CRT is getting dim although the color is solid. Will probably take this one to my TV shop friend and see if they can test the tube. 1985 GE 19" PC chassis with excellent color....very strong CRT and electronic tuner. Unfortunately I took these pics with my Mac's camera and I cannot adjust exposure. The rasters look better than this in person. Last edited by zenith2134; 03-25-2009 at 04:18 PM.

Nice sets! I really like the Sony, I use the one I have regularly. Not a bad GE either! Ya done good today Tom!

So far, I haven't even taken the sets apart but further testing reveals that the Sony's degauss section needs service and the GE only needs some basic adjustments like focus and yoke tilt. Feels good to get some new sets.

That was probably the best solid state chassis that GE built. The main things that fail are a 100 uf cap in the vertical circuit, a 100 uf cap by the flyback, and a cap (think it's something like a 4.7uf) in the B+ line to the video output circuit. When this cap fails, the screen will be darker on one side and the picture will be smeary. Some of these would have a burned horizontal centering pot and a shorted HOT, all caused by the 100 uf cap by the flyback.

Also on that PC chassis..........
I used to see a 33uf 160 volt cap in the regulated B+ line fail quite a lot in addition to those mentioned by Radiotvnut. The one in the vertical is C-621. I don't remember the locations of the other ones.
There is probably a mini-manual in a little compartment on the back of the set. I always liked those sets, but, IIRC the CRTs didn't last quite as long as I would have liked.

This CRT is very strong luckily. And ye its got the minimanual.
Bad news though. I screwed up.......I was reducing the width a bit and the metal shaft of my alignment tool shorted to the horizontal output heatsink. Now I've got a deadset. When i hit the power button, it clicks. And thats all it does. Guess I'll have to scope out the HOT area.
