If the flyback is bad, which it very well might be on this set, the horizontal output is probably toast as well. Now to figure out why they failed. Leave that to the experts....

As an "expert" service tech, I'd say the flyback/horiz output transistor is bad. Also check the 2 big power diodes for shorts in the power supply. They're mounted side by side on ferret tubes next to the switchmode transformer, and fry anytime the fly goes. And also check the solder connections very closely on the small coil next to the horizontal output transistor. They're prone to have bad joints.

I'll second that the flyback went belly up and took the horizontal output transistor with it. A word of caution. Don't power the set up in it's current state. The power supplies in those won't take a short on the B+ line for long without blowing up. No need to have to rebuild the P/S if you don't have to. Before you do anything, unsolder the HOT and check it for shorts. The HOT is the big black transistor that's mounted to a heatsink behind the flyback. You should be able to get the parts from www.tritronicsinc.com.

Got the parts in today, flyback and HOT. got out the gun, solder wick and had a go at it. it was maybe 20 minutes worth of work since the set was already apart from testing the HOT. put it back togeather and tried her out. first good sign was no whining when i plugged it in, hit the power button and it clicked on and a few seconds later i got a picture! fiddled with the screen and focus controlls with a pen cap (only plastic tool i could quickly fashon). there was a tech note with the fly saying that sometimes there will be some issues with the picture tearing on the right side and to add a cap but it looks perfect to me so i put it all back togeather and ran it for about 30 minutes. called John the owner and said he can come by and get it tomorrow, his goal was to have it back by the superbowl....mission accomplished. it was 87 dollars in parts after shipping. i of course didnt charge him to do it since you guys did all the real work....all i did is replace parts. but thak you steve for the help, and to magmod, who appears banned already, and radiotvnut for the site where i got the parts from (good site!). You guys are awesome, and John really thanks you all also.
