My first '09 find: 19" Sony KV1926RA - Videokarma.org TV - Video

I was at the SA looking at LP's when one of the workers said "excuse me, let me step over you". I looked up and he was carrying a TV into the back. I asked him what was up with the TV and he then recognized me as being the one who takes old TV's. He said it didn't work and he was about to throw it in the dumpster. I asked him what it's problem was and he said "I think the picture tube is bad, I plugged it up and all it does is buzz." I told him not to trash it and I'd give a few dollars for it. The clerk asked if $5 was fair and I agreed. The TV turned out to be a Sony KV1926RA from 12/89.

The culprit turned out to be a 22uf, 250V cap in the standby circuit. This cap was causing the relay to buzz. I replaced the cap and adjusted the CRT bias and drive controls and it's now a nice playing TV. It actually had a bright, sharp picture before adjustment; but, there was a little too much of a red tint for my taste. I might have been that way from the factory. This is one of those oddball Sony's that requires the original type remote to autoprogram the channels. Fortunately, I had a Sony remote that was close enough to work. The CRT also test very strong after 20 years. I'm sure I'll be finding this TV a new home; as I really don't collect models this new. At least it was in a woodgrain plastic case and not another Funai TV/VCR combination.

Awesome find!! Looks like it works better than my '84 13" Trinitron. The picture on mine seems to be out of focus in the bottom left hand corner but fine everywere else. I wonder what would be causing just that one corner to be out of focus?

I think this may have been the last of the woodgrain cabinets. All the '90 model Sony 19" sets that I've seen were in the regular square black box. I've advertised this set locally for $50, mainly just to see what happens. I really don't care if it sells or not because the more I watch it, the more I like it. Let 'em go buy a $149.99 regular TV or a $300 LCD set. Both of which will be Chinese made and likely not be the quality of this TV; but, try convincing the public of that.

It could be that the yoke is slightly out of position or the CRT is a little aged. Are you sure it's a focus problem and not a purity issue? It may just need degaussing.

Bet it is a purity problem, Trance88.

I like the look of this set, radiotvnut....but yeah these are too new for me as well. Someone will be getting a very reliable set....good work saving it!

How do you degauss it? Is there a button somewere?

The yoke is that thick cable coming out of the top of the back of the CRT right?
