Crt question

There is one thing I do not understand about a b/w picture tube. The coating on the inside of the screen is white, so how does the tv develop black? Thanks, Doug

The same way a movie screen does.
Black is relative.
If it ain't lit, it's black to your eye compared to the surroundings.
