Mama Mia
My hubby and I saw this movie last night. It was great! I never knew Merryl Streep could sing - WOW! A very funny energetic movie!

The movie critics are negative on the movie.
My wife and I have seen the stage musical twice in Chicago. It is just a ton of fun. We'll probably wait to rent the DVD, but I expect we will like it. Cheers, Snade |

My wife and I also saw the movie and would give it 4 out of 5 stars. As a closet ABBA fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the integration of their songs into the movie. I am thinking of taking my wife to the stage presentation when it comes to town.

I haven't seen it yet, but yeah, interesting casting call on Meryl. I first heard her kicking out the jams in "Postcards from the Edge" when she did "I'm checking out [from this Heartbreak Hotel]" and she certainly can sing. Nice to see an older actress getting front and center in such a high-profile film.
Best, C.

I saw the stage presentation when it was here but was thinking on passing on the movie as I did not think Meryl could sing but with 2 giving thumbs up, maybe I'll go to it. I go to the movies maybe 2x a year and my kid wants to see the new Journey to the Center of the World (or whatever the name is) 3d movie .

If you like Meryl signing, check her out in Prarie Home Companion. She and Lilly Tomlin play a couple of singing sisters on Garrison Keeler's show.
Woody Harrelson and John C. Riley (I think I got the first name right) are hysterical. Kevin Cline is the perfect Guy Noir!

I too saw the stage production and it was great! The local critics here are giving the movie great reviews. I guess you can never go wrong by ignoring the critic's opinions...

My wife and I saw it last night. There are a few people singing that shouldn't, Pierce Brosnan for one. The girl who played the daughter is cute and can sing. Like many musicals, it seems (IMO) that they sometimes break into song at an inappropriate time, just to be singing, and it doesn't add anything to the story.

My wife and daughter and I went to see the movie on Friday. We had seen the broadway show twice and just loved it. The movie tries hard and has some success but one has to remember that a great broadway show sometimes just doesn't have the same effect on screen. The young girl is terrific, I didn't expect Pierce to be great, Streep is good. Movies and shows are different beasts and should be treated as such. I liked both but being in a full theater with all of the folks on their feet during the last ten minutes of the broadway show is something that can't be duplicated in a movie theater!!

Mrs H and I (who almost never go to movies, BTW) just got back from seeing it. It was OK; not a bad way to spend a dreary, steamy Massachusetts midsummer afternoon. We both agreed we liked it better on stage (and I will admit to having enjoyed the stage production much more than I would have expected!). That said, I thought that the Dancing Queen number was quite well done. I liked the "Greek chorus" gags.

I thought the movie had a lot of forced enthusiasm, and wasnt executed very well.I think musicals, like comedies, are the hardest things to pull off on the screen. Not even close to the Broadway musical.Bummer.
