Was at Carmine's house today that he is renovating and found an old Detroit News from 1975 with quite a bit of ads for tv's and appliances.
Fretter, Highland and Good Housekeeping stores were in there with specials too!

The only thing Hudsons is selling out of their Detroit store are memories and a pile of dust. I heard that when they shut down that they literally sold off the brass doorknobs that had their name engraved on them.

Didja know that the Hudson car took it's name from one of the founders of the department store? He financed the car company. I know a whole lot about nuttin.

Ahh.. yes... The GE Filter-Flo. Pretty cool washers I'd say and fun to watch as it would pump water into the round filter pan and down into the clothes. Those things were loud and used LOTS of water.

Wasn't the hudsons department store blown down by CDI about 7 years ago ,or so? SOME huge hudsons department store was imploded by their company, I'm not sure if that was it or not.

I PERSONALLY watched the same company blow down the old RIKES buliding in Dayton, in'99- it was a large department store, in the "good ol days".l

Yes, It was in 1998.
Many areas of Detroit are like a ghost town of sorts, With some areas being used more than others.
The old Packard plant where my Grandfather worked is still standing with some areas inside it being used for storage.
The ruins of Detroit is a good website to go to for info on these and other historic buildings including the first Ford factory.
Another building that went down about 20 years ago was the old Dodge main plant in Poletown. It took a while to demolish as it had many layers of concrete and re rods for them to get through.
I can say that one did not give up without a fight...
Many areas around the remaining surviving buildings are unsafe day or night so sightseeing is out of the question!
I see Detroit as a filthy, Dead city for the most part and don't go there. (that is just my opinion though). Some people say, Look at the new stadium and areas around the ren cen as well as mexicantown and greektown, but that is not enough to get me to go there. (Everything seems to be geared toward the casinos now). But any of the old industrial areas or cool buildings that I am interested in are pretty much done for and rotting away with time.

I love that site! For some reason I've always had a morbid interest in abandoned factories.....it's almost as if I can see, hear and feel all the people and activity that's gone before.

Any news on the status of Packard Main? I *really* need to get there before they pull it down. Would love to spend a couple of days touring it. Have been all over Studebaker's complex in South Bend, and it's days are numbered too.

There has been talk of tearing it down for years, The city even started demolition on some of the smaller buildings on the site back in the late 90's but a court order from the owners stopped it.
The idea for the moment is to keep it intact and convert it to an industrial park.
It was like walking through a graveyard of sorts when I went through it back in the late 80's
One of the floors was stuffed full with garbage like pictured on the website, Others were empty with nothing but peeling paint on the walls.

That is a neat website. I was looking at the mall they showed; what a waste, people are steady building in one neighborhod and steady tearing down in another. The old mall I knew as a kid has been limping along for nearly 15 years and is finally dead. In the mid-90s I took a camera in there to get some snapshots before everything closed and the security guard threatened to throw me out. Fine customer service they offer there...

Here is a sad picture, This sign used to display the number of autos built.
I remember driving by it almost every day and back then thought that the "motor city" was pretty cool. When the auto plants were going everyone that wanted a job had one, And it wasn't for minimum wage at a stupid casino either...
