Yeah, but still a nice looking set with good colors. Might bring the seller some good coin.

Talking more like 1956

I think the year is more like 1956, not 1946. No UHF so it can't be 1966. The style of the ad looks to be of the 50's. Bobbysox and all....

Also it's painted metal. Maybe the handle is bakelite.....

ebay goof--I'll say!

If that Hotpoint set were in fact 1946 vintage it would likely have channel 1 and might also have a continuous tuner, which it doesn't. Secondly, I have seen pics here on AK of 1946 TVs; none of them had screens as big as that one (the screens of most late-'40s sets were about 8-10 inches at most). Where the seller ever got the idea that Hotpoint set was made in 1946 (and that the ad was from a 1946 magazine [!]) I will never know.

The originator of this thread was and is correct. This is indeed an ebay goof, and, IMO, a monumental one at that. The seller either doesn't know much about antiques (which seems likely from here) or else he/she is just trying to get as much money as possible from the sale.

I would also guess that the seller is very new to online auctions and doesn't know the rules of the road, yet. Seems to me this is a case of deceptive advertising, which should be brought to the attention of ebay's administrators.

Finally, the poster who said 1956 would be a better guess as to the vintage of this Hotpoint portable TV is probably right. If the VHF tuner has a UHF position between channels 2 and 13, however, it is not too old to have had UHF available as an option; UHF converters were available in the '50s as well. Some cities, such as Youngstown, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana, to name just two, had only UHF television stations in the '50s, so TVs marketed in these areas either had to have UHF installed as a standard feature or else UHF converters for VHF-only sets had to be made available.

The set is a 55-56 model and is made of metal. I sent them a note to that effect but so far they haven't revised it. Oh well it is a nice set.

Well, sometimes people do make honest mistakes. And others simply don't know any better.

In any case, it is a nice looking set. If it were closer to me, I'd bid on it.
