I've finally canceled DirecTV subscription
After having direcTV for 4 years I finally canceled the subscription. Ever since I got the digital TV converters/DVD recorder I really haven't watched the DirecTV programing and even when I did watch it it was mostly just Turner Classic Movies...too much of the other programing just had too much commercials and logos on screen. I figured I was much further ahead to just buy the DVD's of TV shows I like as the direcTV bill had got up to $60.00 a month!

The only reason I got direcTV was for NHL Center Ice,altho I do enjoy The XM channels they have. After the playoffs are over its gone too.I can get center Ice over my computer and I have built up my music collection to the point that I don't need XM .There just isn't enough on that I care to watch so it just isn't worth it.

Way to go Chad! I did the same thing because I got tired of paying $70 for 155 channels of nothing! I've now got cable; but, there's still not much on there that does anything for me. TV Land does not have the variety of programs it once did and most of the other channels I could care less about. My Mother watches the news channels and sometimes a movie. I need to do like you said and just buy the DVD's of the shows I like. That way, I can watch whenever I want and not have to look at commercials or those stupid network logos!

I dropped my DirecTV service in December 2005 after I got tired of their excessive compression and chopped-up non-OAR movies even on the HD channels. Their switch from Music Choice to XM Radio was the last straw that convinced me to cancel. The over $2,200.00 saved so far has been spent on HD movie discs and equipment.

If my mother was not in the residence i would dump the Time Warner cable except for the Road Runner internet. I rarely watch television anymore since i bought a computer except for the local news, Parking Wars, Weeds, Dirty Jobs, and Survivor. Whenever i do watch television the variety is crap. Sometimes i think of subscribing to the on demand premium channels instead of the premium channels themselves. That way i could watch Weeds, HBO's Real Sex etc. whenever i want without paying for other garbage i dont watch. The only thing that is holding me back is that i am on a package deal. If i cancel stuff out i would probably be paying just as much as i am paying now. My brother has DirecTV, and he thinks he is saving money over regular cable. He may get more channels than cable, but his channel lineup is not the best from what i have seen. He does not even get Animal Planet. I did the math, and i would be paying just as much with satelite as i do with cable. Alot of times i get bored with television, and just pop in a DVD. The other day i was watching Porky's 1 and 2. I just bought the Home Run Derby tv show set on Ebay last week since i like watching, and learning about sports players from yesterday. Yesterdays ball players played for the game. Not the price of the game.

I think some direcTV boxes can also receive over the air ATSC HDTV. If so, your box still has a use.

I will continue to use it for the movies stored on the hard drive though. I think it will store them even if the satellite connection isn't hooked up. |

I know myself, I could go without cable since I got my two Zenith HDTV tuners. Mom still likes cable and I still like the History channel but otherwise I could go without. In fact every Sunday night, she has me hook the converter box to the '82 Zenith just to watch Knightrider on Retro TV Network.
