The Taking of Pelham 123.....
If I had to list my Top 5 crime films, this one would make that list. What's not to like? Robert Shaw & Walter Matthau under one roof and both in top form. So, I was surprised today to discover that even a "perfect" film like this one is subject to the remake treatment -
Pelham 123 / 2009 It will be handled by director Tony Scott. He's got a couple early works I like (True Romance, Enemy of the State) but not much else in the last 10 years. Anyone else a fan of the original? Any issues with remakes of classics? I suppose ultimately one should not care what Hollywood does but it never ceases to amaze me that with all of the terrific, original storylines out there a remake is the best that can be done? Eeeeesh!

I barely remember it I haven't seen it for years but I remember liking it...
I really haven't liked Tony Scott since Crimson Tide. |

I have always liked that movie. Great genre- gritty New York of the 1970s.
As for Hollywood and remakes, Hollywood is largely a risk averse and perhaps lazy industry. Remakes are easy as the premise is already there and the old film is good advertising.

Oh, they will. They've remade Planet of the Apes and Omega Man. Soylent Green is the third of the Heston Post-Apocalypse Trilogy and an obvious target.

I can't imagine them making fun of the Japanese visitors now like they did in the original-which kind of "made" the movie...

Great flick, but a remake is a travesty and with Tony Scott at the helm even more so.

I figured Quentin Tarantino would've/could've been a great candidate to direct this. It's a favorite of his, and an obvious influence on Reservoir Dogs.
If Tony Scott handles Pelham with the same humor and aplomb he did with Tarantino's True Romance, then I would definitely look forward to this movie. |
