Found a Dualette!
On cold Saturday mornings in the winter my wife likes to get out of the house. Usually we find some antique malls to hit. Hadn't been in this one since probably last year this time. Was in kind of a hurry because this place didn't have any heat to speak of. There in the back sat my find for the day. A genuine dualette by Sylvania! Coral and Ivory (white and pink to some of us) although it can be hard to tell beneath all the grime. The inside is equally dirty. Not busted up, though. The only damage is the little bezel that goes around the antennas (which are also missing.) This will need a recap. The crt had me wondering (I have had poor luck with Sylvania picture tubes, and I wondered if it might be an oddball like Philco used) but it's a standard 6v filament and tests strong. Another project on the pile. Oh, how much? Well, the place only took cash and I only had $35 on me. I had enough left over to leave a tip at lunch.

Marvelous set. But for the uninitiated: why "Dualette"?

I believe Sylvania named it the "Dualette" because it has two speakers (one on each side of the CRT-- both are identical ordinary small speakers-- this isn't a two-way speaker system).
...Not exactly the biggest sales point in the world to name a TV after, but I guess that's how it goes sometimes. Funny thing though-- I happen to have a Dualette with a two-tone aqua/blue cabinet that includes a clock-timer. The clock-timer is located where one of the speakers would normally go, which means this "Dualette" only has one speaker. I guess the name "Singlette" wouldn't sound as good, so they left the name the same.

Excellent score!
Never seen one of these "in the flesh", at least not in recent decades. When restored (or when they were new), how are these sets, performance-wise, compared to other sets of the era? |
