I just posted an ad on CL today to find some old sets. I wonder how many
people are going to contact me because they think their 80's 12" sets are
rare antiques? Actually, I've had decent luck with this in the past. If i find anything good I'll try to get pics up.

I've uncovered a few promising leads that way, one or two forties vintage sets and a few well-meaning offers of fifties sets. Nothing that I chose to pursue, but they're still out there. Funny enough, I have not been been overwhelmed by dreamers thinking that selling their seventies or eighties-vintage sets to me was going to let them retire early.

I've posted ads once or twice, but nothing big came of it. HOWEVER; when I was still a kid and living in West Los Angeles, I distributed flyers to the neighborhood. That area was 80% retirees, who were young middle class families during the 50s. So that flyer program turned up a LOT of nice sets, only a few 40s sets, but a lot of late 50s B&W consoles and round color sets. That was in about 1980, so it likely would be different now. If you live in or near an area with a population of retirees, you might try flyers.

I've run some ads on CL and freecycle; around here, it being rural, there isn't that much traffic on the sites so I haven't had much response. If I really wanted attention I'd put an ad in a local "shopper" publication that really covers the area well. I have a friend who will run ads in there looking for tube audio stuff, old Hammond organs, tubes, etc, and he has really cleaned up. Lots of goose chases, though, which is why I don't do it more seriously. I don't think any of the contacts I got off those sites amounted to anything. Several 80's consoles, that was about it. I will try again. I'm thinking that the best description for what you are looking for should be "TV sets with knobs" which makes it pretty clear, though it still lets some 80s junk slip through.

I have an old ad on the ETF classifieds page regarding sets I am trying to get rid of. Every so often I get a response-a couple weeks ago I found a home for a pair of mid-50s bw consoles thanks to someone who happened across it.

I've had some luck with this , Actually it's not a bad idea , the thing is you have to sift through alot of useless responces , 1980's sets and such . The last time I done this , which is getting close to 10 years ago , I found a few tube sets . but I had many calls with 1970's transistor colour cabinet sets . Alot of people have no real idea how old a TV is , and will call you and you later find out that it's a 1970's 80's TV .
Im going to do this again just to see what I come up with .
I think I will alot print up some ads for the bulletin boards

Well, I got the first response to my ad. a 1990 RCA with remote, and no HV.
It's free if I want it but way too new for me. I wonder how many of these I'll
see before I find anything interesting. All is not lost though, I have a t.v.
repairman friend who'll take the newer sets off my hands.

It's starting to get a little more interesting. I've just been contacted by someone who has an Emerson TV1828 which he believes to be from the early 60's. It's a 19" B/W portable in a metal cabinet and it is complete with all original knobs and the built in antennas are intact. Anyone have an idea of the exact age of this set? I know this isn't anything like a TT-5 or a Royal Soveriegn but its nice to know there are some older sets out in the wild still.

That line of Emersons are pretty good sets. I have an early 60s version that I bought when I was teenager in the 80s. Always worked great (I haven't fired it up in years because I know it needs caps) and has one neat feature that Emerson put on a lot of its portables: a sleep timer. I used to use that feature when I stayed up to watch Johnny Carson!

Well... these ads have made the wife happy, 'cause I found a nice daily watcher, it's not an antique by any means, but I just got a nice 27" Sony Triniton. The living room set was a 13", so the bigger set earned some points with the wife.

It just keeps getting better. I just got a e-mail from a woman who has an old
color console in her house for me to pick up. says its from the 60's. Who knows? a roundie maybe? I'm going to go look at it tomorrow.

Well, I just got a email from the owner of that Emerson. The set's in Rhode Island! I haven't found anything in my area yet, though.
