My first electronics recycles day finds, CA style!

I noticed an article in the Los Angeles Daily News last week, that they were having an electronics haz-mat collection day at the Wells Fargo Bank in Simi Valley. I hadn't been to any of these before, mainly because I didn't want the torment of seeing rare valuable TVs that legally have to be destroyed after being collected.

BUT, I happened to drive past the place, and decided to stop and talk to the guys. This is a private company which is working under contract with the California Air Resources Board (a crooked lefty liberal tax stealing agency.) The guy I talked with was very nice, and told me that basically, the government pays his company 25 cents/lb for TV sets to be dismantled. Evidently, if you catch one of these privately owned companies at the right time, you can work with them!

He let Kay and me walk around the parking lot, and most of what I saw was desktop computers, printers, and 1990s vintage TVs. However, buried in the pile of CRT computer monitors was a Sony Profeel KX-2501 with a big hole punched in the side. I asked about it, and he said it weighed about 300 lbs, and so he would let me have it for .25/lb ($75). Obviously that's out of line, but I came up with a brilliant idea. I knew that a KX-2501 weighs about 135 lbs, so I said out loud in front of the crowd, "If I dead-lift this TV, and backhand-curl it using only the handles on the tv, as high as my chin, can I have it for $20?" He looked at my average build, and said "sure... Just don't sue if you break your back". 30 seconds later, he was $20 richer, and I had a KX-2501 in the back of the truck ... When I said that in front of an audience of (much) younger guys, I was a bit worried that I got in over my head, since the last time I won a $100 bet powerlifting a KX-2501 was when I was about 25 years old. 40 now. Anyway, I did it!

Sounds like out governement has made sure old TVs are more profitable as scrap than for re-use!
