Hey all, I went to an estate sale today and there they had 2 tv;s one was what lookes to be mid to late 70's Magnavox with digital keypad, looked too new for me, but the otherone was a 60's Magnavox combo unit. stereo works, and is solid state, but the tv dont work, does anyone know what year this set is? Thanks!

Being a solid state radio, but with the old boat-shaped channel knob, it's likely 1967-68. No big cash value, but should be saved! They started with the 23" rectangular tube as early as '65 or 66 though. Can you post the model #?

23v and 25a are the same tube. a regular 25 inch tube is a full viewing 23 inch. dont ask me why-the are the same size tube. my maggie has a 25axp22 in it now, however,om the label inside the set.it calls for a 23vanp22? the tube has been replaced under service contract in the late 70s. i like this set and the picture is very, very good.color saturation.flesh tones and that chromatic button the back (sucks big time). it is just too damn big to handle! what a kickin radio though!!!

Hey, how is your CTC 16 doing BTW? Did you solve the flickering issue it was having?

Not really, i believe the issue with the CTC 16 is the inrush limiter.. It's broken and I have it held back together with a shower curtan holder..... lol, When it makes a weak connection, the set starts doing the half bright raster with retrace lines... I think I can replace this with a CL-80.

Well I peeled open the set tonight, found the build date of 8-1966. I was wrong about the crt, it actually calls for and uses a 23egp22. Replaced under warranty with service card attached Aug, 1977. The original tube was a Magnavox 23egp22a, the original crt's tag sticker sits in the cabinet. Powered on a variac, the tube lights and has snow, sound and all, looks rather dim, out of focus and purity is off. Havent tested tubes yet..

thats a good thing! this one is a little older than mine. under my crt mask is a light with the channel number illuminated and the remote eye. these maggies have a look all there own and those chassis seem to hold up well. expensive and pretty good quality. the receipt was in a bag taped to the set. 1863.32 new in january 1968! the tube is a 25axp22 replacement from vdc corporation. mine is very clean and i am getting used to the magnavox look. it is in my garage and the radio will rock the block!!! your rca will have a better picture (roundies rule),
but i doubt the radio can best that maggie! good luck and i am happy on your find.

Yes I agree, Ive been tinkering with this Maggie in the back of my explorer, I had a 68 Maggie console identical to yours a few years back.... I can tell this one is an oldie! I remember now that maggie chassis used a push pull rod for focus.. Kinda odd but that was the focus deal, now it needs convergence and some purity alignments, im assuming this is the cause to the really warped pincushion on the top.. Also I have this tv hooked to a vcr thaqt produces a blue raster when it's playing, the tv is picking this up as sweeping red and green color bars scrooling accross the screen, looks like either demod tubes or burst amp, those 6GH8A's are a pain when it comes to finding one that actually doesn't have some kinds h-k short in my stash...
BTW, thought this was kinda cool, the service tag in the set was the same address the estate sale was at. The woman told me they bought it brand new (sometime in the 60's) , it sat in the same spot since new, and has not been powered up since 1978 when they got there new set. *Maggie as well and still working*

The bezel around the pix tube gives it away as one of the very early rectangular sets that had the 23EGP22 CRT, those are pretty rare sets, it's probably got the T918 or the T920 chassis which were the earliest versions of the series that went T918-T920-T931-T933-T940-T951-T962 all the later sets were improvements on the previous one but were basically the same chassis. That's a pretty rare set because the 23EGP22 was almost immediately superceeded by the 25XP22/25AP22

Ok I went out and checked the chassis, it uses the U9109 BB chassis, and the CRT was replaced in 1977 wihn a "photo optic" brand name "grade b CRT

Ok guys, i read the forums, gimmie the low-down on 23egp22 crt's... Be gentle, lol, mine seems to be producing a pinkish hue, green sucks... And this tube presumably has low hours on it too...

Holy Moley! That's a rare version of Magnavox to use that awful Motorola tube!!!! I knew that they existed, but never saw one. It looks like it has had the bezel replaced. The 23EGP22 was actually a 21" screen, and the tubes were so bad that the TV mfrs put out upgrades.

Dr. Dan will go nuts when he finds out about that set!!!!!
