My new Zenith Space commander 600
Hello everybody,
I've just bought from the excellent Mr Poster a Zenith television and I really can't wait till the moment I will have it right in my hands... Is there any Zenith expert who could tell me something more about this tv? Is it a chromacolor model? Early 70's? Late 60's? From the pictures I have I don't understand how the tuning works... Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks Marco

Very nice rare set. Space command 600 table sets are the hardest to find. I think its safe to say that regardless of where you live! ITs a chormacolor crt. Whenever you see the tricolor logo with a black background, it means its a chomacolor tube. Most likely a 14A9C50 or 51 chassis. The TV is from about 1971. Did you find this on his website? Do you know the working condition?
As for tuning, its motorized as its space command. The top buttons are tuning up, down, and power. The knobs from top to bottom left to right are: Volume, VHF fine tuning, color, tint, UHF channel selector. There is no front mounted manual VHF selector. There is a backup knob on the back of the TV for manual VHF tuning in the event the remote control drive assembly fails. (you still have the ability to change channels then). If you dont already have the space command 600 remote control grab one off ebay. You see about a millon space command 600 remotes every week. Each one of those remotes represents a space command 600 TV thats been crushed and buried. You are getting a very special set. Its one of the very last true space command 600 models.

My grandad had one just like that in his office; they bought it new in 1968 when they built the offices, & it was there til '89 when he died. I got it & gave it to a friend of mine who promptly threw it away. It still worked perfectly,they never watched it except on stuff like the moon shots, New Years' football games & such as that. I wished I'd known enuff to latch on to it & kept it...

Reliability
Doug, thanks for your informations!Yes I saw the Zenith on Mr Poster website but I don't know if it is working or not nor Mr Poster knows it I bought it "as he found it". I only hope, if it doesn't work, I'll be able to find the spare parts to bring it back to life! Since I live in Italy I also hope it will arrive safe and in good shape... Is the chassis you mention a reliable one? I mean, could I use it everyday? Is it an hybrid chassis? How can you tell what channel are you watching? I don't seem to find any channel window on the set. To be honest I'm also making goo goo eyes at another Zenith set Mr Poster has in its collection. I only hope it will remain unwanted for a little more time (time to raise money...
 ). Any advice about where to find a service manual for this tv?Sandy,Every time I hear about someone that throws away an old tv set I feel very sad especially if it is a Zenith, the brand I really love the most...

That set is rare, even in this country... You can expect the channel number to show up in the center of the round knob (provided the bulb isn't burned out). Zenith called that little projector system "bullseye tuning", and they used it from the late 50s to late 60s.
If you look closely at the upper knob on this 1966 set, you should be able to see the number "9". That's about how it wil display on your set. (Better in real-life, washed-out in the picture)  Good luck with the set!

The channel number will be in the window to the left of the UHF tuning knob. The UHF knob is the large knob under the open door. Almost all Zenith sets with remote control will not have VHF tuning knobs on the front panel they will use the power tuning having a button for higher and lower. If the set is a lower end set it may have only have tuning in the higher direction. As Doug has pointed out there is a knob in the rear of the tuner on the back of the set that was to be used to set the channel skip tabs on the rear of the tuner. They were used to skip over unused channels in the owners local area. It became handy when the tuning motor would fail later in the sets life.

I didn't notice the window until you mentioned it... But that sure looks like a bullseye knob. Sure that window isn't just for UHF?

The window shows both VHF and UHF channels. There are two concentrically aligned dial drums. The UHF drum fits inside the VHF drum. Channels 2-13 appear through the window. When UHF is selected, there is an opening in the VHF dial drum so you can see the UHF drum behind it.
My 2 cents on this system: The set is hard to watch in the dark as the dial bulb is too bright if you are watching a UHF channel. Reason being, the UHF dial drum is white with black letters, thus much of the light passes through the whole window. Very annoying. Uses a #130 bulb which is correct. VHF is no problem as the VHF drum has black background. Those of you who are familiar with this setup probably can agree.
