Ken Burns has done it again, is all I can say.

It was way more horrible than I thought. Too many John Wayne movies gave me the wrong idea, I guess.

God bless all those in war, then and now.

Ken Burns is a genius!! Yes it was horrible, war always is, that will never change. Thank God for The Greatest Generation!!

Yes, it is a very good series - have seen bits and pieces. Amazing courage and comraderie.

My uncle was shot down over France in '44 or '45. He'd graduated from Harvard and was headed for Harvard Medical School. He was one of the few who could have avoided the draft. To a man, everyone whose opinion he respected advised him to enter medical school, but he had a higher calling.

I think Burn's Civil War documentary is one of the best documentaries ever made ... but I stopped watching The War after the third episode ... while I enjoyed parts of it ... and I teared up when the telegram came from Italy ... even though I knew it was inevitable ... for me it seemed to drag on ... and on .... and on.

We owe the men and women who fought (and died) in WW II a tremendous debt of gratitude (I am glad that the Memorial in DC was finally erected before all of them had died) ... most of the WW II vets that I have known over the years (I'll be 60 next Jan.) are very humble and don't consider what they did as "any big deal" ... but Burn's documentary reminds us that what they did was a "very big deal".

Once again Ken Burns has put together a series that most documentarians(is that a word?) can only dream about. Pretty much everything this guy has done has been of the highest caliber. His subject material has been quite diverse and yet he always seems to be incredibly well informed.

Watching it now. Damn good!

My Grandfather fought in WWII over in New Guinea. I look back on this generation with much respect, and find it sad knowing that an entire generation of these guys is quickly fading away into the chapters of history. These guys had stories to tell, if you could get them to open up. They were young, and fought like hell, and took this country to being #1.

Fast forward 60 years: When I look at so many of the young, imature, idiot gang bangers, drug dealers and low life 18~20 year olds these days with no class, manners, or concern for anyone but themselves, it just depresses me.
I can't imagine some prick with his baggy jeans around his ass being in the armed forces. He'd trip, and get his ass shot.
AND NO,,, NOT all young kids today are like this, but the average number of loosers has to be alot higher now then what it was in 1941.

I watched every moment of each episode and really enjoyed. Yes, some of the shots were redundant but I saw many stories, pictures and video that had never bee shown before and I applaud the production.

I'm sure that the terror these young people faced was something that most of us cannot comprehend and the conditions were horrendous.

I applaud ALL of our veterans and current military personnel and agree that this series should be required viewing for all high school students. hings always have a tendency to repeat themselves so the better we educate our youth, the less chance that apathy will hit if they are called to defend our nation.

Not going to make any political statements to our current situation as there were many during WWII and what preceded our being drawn in fully after the Japanes attack on Pearl Harbor that were all for isolationism. There were many mistakes made by the leadership during WWII that took many lives unnecessarily but ultimately, we did the right thing in going to Europe and of course, there was no choice in regards to Japan.

Hopefully,nothing I have stated will cause others to debate as my statements are my opinion an do not express the views of AK or any of its' members unless they say so.

Just finished watching the last episode. I got a little teary there at the end, just couldn't help it, all they went through, and so many families didn't go to the airport and the train station to celebrate cause their boys were dead. I actually poured a drink and said "Here's to you, boys." The survivors were a breed we will not likely see again.

I glad I'm not the only one who get a little emotional watching "War". My father served in europe during WWII and some of the stories he told me, when I could get him to talk about it, weren't anything like you see on TV or the movies. The vets that served in Vietnam have some hair raising stories too. Peace.

Very good series. Every vet should be given special treatment.
You think with everyone who served during World War II and fought and defeated the Nazis and the Japanese, what a different world this would be if we did not defeat the Axis powers.

My father served during World War II and fought in Anzio. He was awarded the purple heart after getting hit by some shrapnel. Never did talk about the war, that is the reason why he drank.
