First thing, I hope to hear from Charles M. about this set as I feel he may have information about it. I purchased this set a year ago with a trashed cabinet and just got it back from the re-finisher and it came out ok, as good as it can get considering the water damage, the chassis has rust and the electronics are original and I hope Steve Kissinger would like to take on this project as he has done a great job on my previous sets. The metal front tag says "Halbert" and there was a tag on the chassis rear but is not there anymore. I believe this set to be either a prototype or possibly a pre Kaye Halbert set. This set has definitely a pronounced streamlined look with large shoulders and this set uses a 10BP4, this is the most streamlined set I have come across yet! On "Radiola guy" website he had a Kaye Halbert set, which was similar, on his tv sets for sale page but my set has larger shoulders and more pronounced step up top and uses a 10 " tube instead of the 12" used by the other and the set on his site has a decal on the front "Kaye Halbert" as mine has a metal tag that says "Halbert". Any comments or information would be great!

You got me on that "Halbert" badge... They did have a brass badge "KAYE-HALBERT", and without those little lightning bolts that yours has. Frankly no idea! Could yours have been cut in half due to some damage? It's definitely a Telindustries chassis, which was used in all the pre-1951 sets. Look on the tube layout, and see at what address the factory was located. If it's Exposition Blvd in LA, it's the earliest plant. If 3555 Hayden Ave, it's after Harry Kaye got involved. If Howard (Halbert) were still with us, I'd have to call him on this one. The third and younger investor in the Kaye-Halbert corp; Bob Lodge, is still alive and well in Pacific Palisades as far as I know, so I might try to get hold of him. I'm no expert on Kaye-Halbert, but I've tried to compile as much as I could about it. I have plenty of literature and have talked with Howard Halbert on the phone in the mid-1980s. This set will be good material to learn about.

I'd like to take a look at that set in person some time

Yeah I would like for you to see this set sometime, just let me know! The metal tag is undamaged and appears to be original and uncut or alltered however during re-finishing some of the dark patina was lost. Unfortunately the tube chart must have came off at some time as its not there anymore, any other things to look at?? Thanks Charles!

Maybe when I see it, I will come up with a clue. Meantime, let's assume it's a very limited-run set. That company was a small mom 'n' pop operation, and they made quite a few 10-of-a-kind sets, according to Howard Halbert.

Being a small operation, did they (Kay-Halbert) license or buy their chassis from a larger manufacturer?

As far as I know, no. Definitely at least not after it became Kaye-Halbert. They built their own chasses, and some of the cabinets. The high-end cabinets were built by Karpen or Bohnett, depending which model. The early Telindustries chassis may be bought, but even if so, it's exclusive (not seen in any other sets.)

Doug brought his unusual Halbert TV up Friday night and I finished recapping it last night. It was missing a number of tubes and had an open brightness control but after repairing it has a fairly good picture. The tuner has been mucked with at one point so I need to do some work on that yet.

Doug, do you have a double ion trap? The one on the set was not good and I had to steal one off another set.

Nice Job Steve! You be Da Man!

On another note I picked up the 24" Muntz yesterday. That 24" round crt is a MONSTER. It has a rebuilt crt and I will test it tomorrow and report back. The heater segment of the gun assembly is still nice and silvery as if dosen't have many hours on it. I am hoping it tests good.
