19" RCA tube color portable
Has a 19HNP4 crt. What CTC?? is this set? I can't seem to find the CTC number or model number. I got this today at the Goodwill dollar store for $5. The chassis is really dirty and will have to clean it up.

I also got this portable Motorola record player for $2. The case is made out of fiberglass. It was too cool to leave there! I also have a Silvertone that is also made out of fiberglass. polaraman

I'd say CTC53 as well. Looks like you've got some cleaning to do. Have you fired it up yet? I think you'll have a nice set once repaired. Nice looking record player as well!

Plug it in? I haven't done that since I tried an unrestored CTC 19 and it caught on fire.
 That smell was in the house for weeks! The record player was really cool. $2 made it even more cool! polaraman

I was also joking. The set realy did catch on fire! I learned my lesson the hard way!!!! I may need to take the set outside tomorrow and blow it out. polaraman

Several of the Goodwill markets have clearance centers. The clearance centers are the last stop before stuff gets hauled to the dump. They bring in stuff that could not be sold in the main stores. They also had a Solid State Maggie console radio/record player. I passed on it.
Clothes are sold at a dollar a pound. Austin, TX has a place called the Blue Hanger that often has stuff. San Antonio has two Clearance centers Atlanta has one that I know of. polaraman

I'll have to look for one of those around here. Most of them try to charge $30 for $25 DVD players.
I've been running a craigslist ad for a while, but so far all I've been offered is 70's and 80's solid state sets. Last week a guy said he had some kind of color tube set and a B/W portable that he said "will cost you".

My favorite Goodwill is Birmingham Alabama. They do not toss anything electronic away. My TV shop friend and I would go up there and bring a truck load back. He bought modern stuff for the televisions he was working on.
The 36" Sylvania set I have in the bedroom came from there. I bought it for $15 and all it needed was a transistor in the horizontal section and a few lytics. Got a good Tv for less than $20. My friend was making some money buying and repairing Goodwill sets and selling them at the flea market on Saturday and Sunday. He would also pick up sets for repair. I look for the Goodwill Clearance centers every city I travel to. polaraman

I can't find any Goodwill clearance centers around this part of CA. It looks like LA is the place to be for that. I did wonder what happened to all the stuff that never sells. I always see a lot of interesting items being donated, but none of it ever makes to to the stores I visit.
The best place I know of in my area is Urban Ore in Berkeley. It's got a lot of vintage electronics. I bought two stereo table radios from the 60's (one tube, the other solid state), an RCA video disc player, and some other misc things. They've got a lot of old camera equipment, including some early home video cameras (which I couldn't think of a reason to buy). There was also a very plain metal 50's RCA 21" B/W TV, but $100 was more than it was worth to me. Most of the prices are pretty good though. They even had a bare 17" 50's B/W CRT just sitting on the shelf for anyone to implode. I'd go there more often, but driving from San Mateo to Berkeley and back is a stressful all day thing because of traffic.

This is a CTC-36...the CTC-53 can look almost exactly the same from the outside, but it has more transistors in the circuitry....about 1/2 transistors and 1/2 tubes. The one here (CTC-36) is an all tube type set except for a transistor in the vertical oscillator (and maybe a few in the color killer circuit).
I think the days of finding tube type TV sets easily are long gone! I probably have only gotten 3 tube sets so far this year. Even at the thrift store that accepts broken sets, the oldest ones seem to be Zeniths from around 1977 or so. Last edited by Chad Hauris; 08-12-2007 at 06:55 PM.
