The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
I just acquired a letterbox VHS version of "The Last of the Mohicans" starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. I've seen this movie countless times on cable and lamented the loss of scope when converting to full screen. It is a pleasure to see it again in letterbox. What a beautifully made movie! This film captures colonial America in all its glory. No CG, all real action and all faithfully authentic.

Agreed! The sound track is by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. I'm going to add the CD to my collection.

Great Film, but very disconcerting for me to watch. Much of it was filmed locally, so there are people I know in it - kind of derails my focus on the story when they cut to a mortar emplacement and it's Walter manning the fuse - "Look! That's Walter! I went to Elementary School with him!" (And yes, that happens in my head even if I refrain from saying it out loud.
)I've also walked some of the trails, been in the field where the Indians ambush the soldiers, and walked around the fort and the "burning boat" carcass. No matter what you're watching, "Formatted to fit your screen" just stinks.

I love this film but the last 15 minutes is perhaps my favorite of any film I can think of. The fluid & ethereal nature of it is something to behold. It is probably my favorite "historical" film as well. I like Gibson's "The Patriot" very much but it just cannot match LOTM for beauty. I remember when I saw it to a fairly packed house. When it ended, people were quiet & nearly gasping. I know I pretty much forgot to breath during the run down of Magua at the end. Michael Mann did a fantastic job with this. When I get into HD seriously, this one is probably the first one I'll buy.

We've hiked there, also. Pretty place! "In the case of 'The Last of the Mohicans,' the creators of the film felt that the Park and this area in general most closely resembled the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York where the story takes place." Last edited by Urizen; 07-08-2007 at 10:08 AM. |

Here is some info on the director, Michael Mann and the film. Interesting to note how much of a departure LOTM is from his usual fare.

Outstanding movie that has it all. Great story, beautiful cinematography, and incredible soundtrack. The original format is the only way to watch a movie and the bigger the screen the better.

One of my favorite movies and soundtracks ever. I'd be embarrassed to say how many times I've watched it. So many times that now my family gives me a hard time whenever I mention watching it again.
We have vacationed in the Adirondacks for 7 or 8 years and love it up there and always thought that was where the movie was filmed. Quite a surprise to learn it was filmed in NC. WNC mountains are beautiful. Raining here today...may need to pull out the laser disc and relax watching a movie this afternoon. ![]() Terry |

It was filmed, primarily, in the area around Chimney Rock Park, and Asheville, North Carolina, with other secondary filming done, as necessary, in NY and London.
Dougie Maclean wrote the tune "The Gael" which he included on his 1990 CD entitled "The Search", which comprised instrumental music commissioned for, in all honesty, "The Official Loch Monster Exhibition, Drumnadrochit, Scotland." |

Well Poohsan there are people who keep track of things like that for a living; they're called historians.
I liked the way the picture showed the multilingual abilities of the northern Indians with Magua being conversant in English, French and Iroquoian; such a character would have had a working knowledge of Algonquin tongues as well. Such a thing was not at all unusual. And many Indians of the pays den haute and St. Laurence country were literate. |
