I would have to agree! Remember those old Curtis Mathes ads "Expensive and darn well worth it" ? The seller probably paid a TON for this set when it was new. They must not know that you can't even give away a newer console these days.

Curtis Mathes, fine furniture makers, lousy guts---at least that vintage (as I understand). Looks like from the 80's Were'n these Sanyo or some other Jap chassis?
In another thread I told of my NBC NYC studio tour back around 1972. They took us by one of the control rooms and I saw banks of C-M studio monitors there with such fantastic picture quality! Of course those were professional grade and probably were fed directly off of those 2 or 3" VTRs of the day. No signal degradation from being broadcast. Anthony

I think that set has a Magnavox chassies possiably the old starr system. I also think its a 25" set.

This is not a 21" it is a 27" made by Magnavox (Phillips) in the early 90's, I remember seeing them on the production line in Greeneville TN when I used to work for Phillips in the Knoxville office. The CM used a mid line B chassis, my 27 and 32 use the C chassis with PIP and a full AV in/out jack panel. All 4 that I have were built by me from engineering samples that I used in the CRT lab, my 32" has special doped I cathodes, supposed to last a lifetime - so far I estimate it has 60,000 hours+ , still with a perfect picture, chassis has been rebuilt once (all caps) and had the PLL replaced in the tuner once....

Curtis Mathes TV
I knew someone in my hometown years ago whose family had one of those fabulous 3-way Curtis Mathes TVs. They never had any trouble with it, that I was ever aware of, and they had it for years. The one time I remember seeing the set on, it had a very good picture, even with off-air signals from a big antenna with a rotor (that was all we had in the '60s and '70s--cable didn't come to our area until the early '80s). Don't know whose chassis it used, but whatever it was, it worked great! I think CM, like everyone else in color TV's early years, used RCA chassis, the CTC-12 through CTC-15 series, in their sets (rebranded, of course) and they were all roundies.
I don't recall ever seeing any CM sets that used Magnavox chassis, although it is possible they may have switched from RCAs to Maggies in the '60s or even the '70s. One poster here said that some CMs used the Magnavox Star System chassis, which date back to the late '70s. This could very well have been, but having seen only the one set (which was probably made in the '60s) I can't be sure.

all the ss sets i have seen had nec chassis in them.
most had rca crt's. harvey made cm,colortyme,rutherford,and a few others.

I never liked the styling of the solid state CM sets. They always have a very clunky, somewhat cheap look to them. Got one that has a delta gun 25"CRT but I think I will use the CRT in a Zenith Chromacolor set where the CRT was cracked.

Interesting to hear from an "insider". I am curious about the Greenville plant. Did it come from Magnavox, Sylvania or Philco, or was it built by Philips? I seem to recall early 70s Magnaox sets with the Ft Wayne address, Batavia, NY on Sylvania. My 91 Sylvania has the Greenville address. Is that plant still operating?

I think I have it fairly streight, Phillips bought Magnavox in 1972, then bought Sylvania with rights to the Philco name in about 1980. They then combined engineering to a new facility here in Knoxville in 1982, all manufacturing was combined into the old Magnavox production plant in Greeneville TN. All well and good till the mid 80's when they started small screen production in Juarez. In about 1998 Philips sold the Greeneville plant to an investment group of ex and retired employees. I was laid off in 2000 when TV design engineering was moved to Singapore for all direct view, my job moved to Juarez - I would not!!!
At this time as far as I know projection TV for the US market is still designed here in Knoxville and produced in Greeneville allong with the 32 and 35 direct view. In the years that I worked for them Philips made sets with the CM, Philco, Sylvania, Magnavox, Crosley, and Philips name one them all from the same production lines. As an after thought I have been told the Greeneville plant is making projection sets for several brands at this time, though they may not be making the chassis, just final assembly. A small bit of history as I remember it - hope I got it right.....

Thanks Terry for the lowdown. AFAIK Crosley no longer markets TVs.
About 3 or 4 years ago while at a hotel in in Iowa I discovered that they had this brand in the rooms. Shortly afterwards I contacted Crosley about buying a set as I couldn't find any local dealers (I so wanted to buy American!). They told me that they had just stopped making them and my best bet would be to locate any remaining stock at a dealer (they supplied me with a list). And another brand bites the dust. At least I now know who actually made the sets for them. Anthony

harvey built cm and the others and possibly more private labels not seen around here.most of the other names were sold through rent a center type outfits.there were a lot of colortyme and rutherford sets around dayton.
