Magnavox focus question......

Is anyone familliar with the focus adjustment on 1956 Magnavox CTA 492 AA?
I already know that it has something to do with a white wire that comes out of the crt socket. There is a bannana plug on the end of that wire. Down between the vertical output and oscillator tubes there is a small pannel with 3 sockets that will fit the forementioned wire. As it has been for years the white wire has always just been hanging, hooked to nothing.

When I bought the set back in about 1991 I brought it home and it had a nice, crisp picture. I removed the chassis one day for a cleaning as that and tube changing was about all I knew how to do back then. I remember putting it all back together again and ever since the picture was viewable but sort of out of focus. Around 1995 the flyvack went out and I just found a repalcement and the tuff old set is back alive but still needing a focus adjustment.

I am thinking that I may have knocked that wire off years ago and just never figured out my mistake. I noticed tonight that one of the metal sockets is broken in a way that wont allow reconnection. Goodness knows the wire isnt supposed to just hang there. I also noticed only two of the three sockets have wires going to them. The Sams folder says only that "focus may be varied in steps by position of plug in focus board".

I just want to be sure that the wire I mention is the proper "plug" that is supposed to be "possitioned" in the focus board. I dont want to fry the nice original 21ATP4.

If anyone is familiar with this procedure please give me a hint. It looks self explanatory but I want to be sure as I am glad to have this tough old Mag back in action. After 11 years of compete dormancy the set came back to life like I lost the fly yeterday, not 12 years ago. I love these unrestored veterans that seem to never quit. I must admit I replaced about 5 paper caps and a 1 watt resistor that were out of spec in the HV, Horiz, and Damper circuits. I wanted to keep the new flyback.

I KNOW I should have recapped the whole set but frankly it has been taking up my bench since back in the Winter waiting on the heart transplant. I don't do a lot of TV work in the busy warm season and don't have the $$ as well right now. I only use my old originals for fairly short periods of time anyhow. It will be OK until I can recap it. Really unless I want a set to watch for hours on end I don't do very many TOTAL recaps. I really just wanted to get it back in one piece, viewable, and out of my kitchen.

You just try the banana plug in one of the three sockets at a time, and you select which socket gives the best focus. Exercise great care, as there are hundreds of volts involved. Best turn the set off before moving the banana plug.

Thanks! I pretty much figured that was the way but I just wanted to hear it from someone else. from the schematic it looks like one of the settings works off of a 600v line, another may have 275v (not sure if I'm reading right), the last one goes to ground. I will try it as soon as I get a chance and post the result.
