Hi, A friend of mine was given a 36" Hitachi Ultravision TV. He wants a large screen CRT set before getting "stuck" going the LCD or Plasma route.
I know nothing about repairs on newer sets, and this one has a problem and was hoping one of you might know what it could be.
The set has sound and NO picture. Screen is totally dark, no menu display,no nothing. I think it does have high voltage tho, because when you turn it off you get a white "flash" on the screen, and you can feel the high voltage static on the front of the screen. It was manufactured in 2000. Does anyone know if these sets had common problems, and what type of performers were they?

I'm not familiar with that particular set, but many sets will blank the CRT if there is a vertical failure to prevent burning a line into the CRT.

If this is the case you'll see the line if you turn up the screen control.

Replace the vertical IC, associated electrolytic caps. If the IC failed shorted you may find an open fusible resistor and/or shorted diode.

my friend picked up the set from the repair shop. Not sure what they did but the cost ($208.00) was allmost all labor. He said under parts the cost was $19.00. The set had a good pix, BUT I noticed when you swith to different video inputs you can see retrace lines. You woulda thought the repair place would have tried to adjust that.

It sounds like they didn't turn the screen control back to it's original position after they turned it up to confirm the vertical fault.

$19 in parts sound about right for a vertical IC and related parts, but the labor cost seems high. That kind of fault usually takes around half an hour.
