Every dollar the power company spends on an old, evil "energy hog" refrigerator are dollars they don't have to spend upgrading their power production... Which is why they are so interested in pushing it.

Never mind that plain ol' attrition would do the job eventually and that everyone taken out of service equals another sent over from a nation with no pollution controls; on a container ship that burns the dirtiest form of oil available.

But I digress. Junk-science environmentalism is the new state religion. I just hope the NSA didn't hear me blasphemy.

Agreed. And it's funny in a way that the technology to manufacture items went over seas, but the technology to do it clean, safe, and with reduced pollution, which does exist, did not go over seas....

Even better, on abc world news a few weeks ago they said the pollution from China is now traveling over one of those Jet Streams to California.

ps when we replaced our energy hog frig. with a new one, it cut our energy by 40% on that device.... Same size, but we got the most efficient one...

I take my electronic junk to the ecocenter. Here it's "free" (paid with our taxes) and I have no maximum, so why bother to smash junk just to put it in the trash...I just haul it there and it takes me 30 mins , everything is done , and at least everything is reclycled or safely disposed, and the stuff that can be saved is tested and given away to people that need it. its win win win!

For anyone with a vehicle and lots of money to blow on fuel, sure.

Well for the whole 2$ of fuel it takes to get there and back I look at it as an investment for the environement, and it really doesn't bother me. Of course, if you have no mean to get there in the first place...just dump it in the trash.

If it is within a month or so of the the annual electronics recycle day in the county, I'll carry it up there (provided I have time.) Otherwise, the trash can the town provides for pickup will hold a 21" b/w crt nicely. It's dumped by robotic arm, nobody ever sees inside the can. I do make sure and air them out before throwing them away, of course.

That's how it should be done. Here the stuff is just crushed up and loaded into containers to be processed overseas. Knowing this makes it especially frustrating seeing pallets of stuff that is still recent enough to be useful sitting in the yard: 3-5 year old off lease computer gear for example.

Attempts to buy the stuff from them (by a business I did some work for, in quantity - it wasn't one guy walking in trying to buy one unit) were refused without even discussing price. I suspect because they are milking various "green" grants and tax breaks.

Recycled or crushed, the bulk of the stuff is headed to china to create more junk and more pollution anyway.

With bare/loose CRTs, I agree with the others who say "break them up and put in your regular trash". What they don't know won't hurt YOU. I did so years ago with one of those super heavy 26" Sony CRTs. In fact, the whole set (the white plastic one) went into the trash other than parts I saved, once I made all of the pieces small enough.

Of the TVs and monitors I threw into the dumpster intact, without airing the CRTs, I wonder if there was a loud POOM! at any time that scared the crap out of any bystanders, haha. I don't do that anymore, there was just a time I was afraid to open them, what with the lack of a HV probe.

It's a wonder I never got shocked in my youth when I took apart a lot of sets without really knowing what I was doing, including a later-model tube B&W 12" Admiral. I always hated that TV because it was B&W. I have no desire to get another even though it was my first TV. I went ape over the 1989 Magnasonic 19" color set I got as an additional Christmas gift in 1992. That thing cost a c-note even though it lacked the remote and control panel door. That lost vertical deflection in '05 and was tossed. I have no desire to replace that either, too new for my liking.

Yeah, I guess a Tommy Gun will have to do for most of us. Of course those of us here in Canuckistan can't carry a handgun at all, prolly can't have the Tommy Gun either...

I've had this same experience trying to buy things from recyclers.
