Sanford and Son's original shop still there?

That Redd Foxx was a very funny man. He could be absolutely filthy too. I remember once when I was a kid he was a guest on the Merv Griffin show. My dad noticed how every time they'd come back from commercial the audience would be in hysterics- apparently he was saving the jokes you couldn't tell on TV for those commercial breaks.

I loved this show as a kid. I'd usually watch at my grandma's house, wouldn't get the jokes but I loved the idea of collecting junk and somehow making a living from it. Ha. I manage to do one of those things regularly.

Recently I was getting a tire changed in Palm Beach and I was chatting with the tireman and was surprised that he happened to bring up something interesting to me about his past experiences. He used to visit Redd Fox's sister on Riviera Beach and would see Redd come by often way back when. He said his walk was unmistakeable. He also said she still lives there.
Riviera Beach is where they are having the Spring Bling gathering for black springbreakers. They had it there last year also.

She & Redd were a staple on the old Negro "Blue" comedy circuit back in the old days when things were segregated. One of Redd's best lines, to me, was-"A man should never argue w/a woman-He should just dicker..."

No doubt the hippest TV theme song ever... Least ways I think it is. I always loved Sanford and Son, and miss Redd being around. I'll add that I've heard several of his comedy albums, and he WAS raunchy... and incredibly funny.

Now that I went looking, I saw something that tells you just how silly and restrictive the laws still are:

Several 'Sanford' episodes being re-run on, what, "TV-Land" have to be edited TO THIS DAY, because, among other things they say 'nigger' in them. Certainly can't do that, now. We'll happily take the syndication money and promote what a 'wonderful' schedule we have, with such 'classic' shows...and then censor them.

Fuck them all. The show is about ghetto humor. It was part of the show. If you can't stomach it, don't run it at all.

My father went to High School and College in Washington, DC in the 50's He said that one night he and a buddy were out drinking. This was the early 50's. This was during segregation and there were black and white clubs. He said the white clubs closed early so they decided to go to one of the black clubs and keep drinking. Well he said they walked into this small club and Redd Foxx, who he did not know at all, was up on a tiny stage doing a stand up routine. He said he looked up at the stage and Redd Foxx looked at them and says "It must be snowing outside cause two flakes just blew in". Dad never forgot it.

In my opinion, it's more important that they put stickers on the CENSORED media than put stickers on the PARENTAL ADVISORY media. Very few things burn me more than buying a DVD or CD of music I'm familiar with only to have it be- surprise! - edited for "cuss" words. The Knack, Fishbone and Green Day are only a couple I've noticed lately. I'd have returned them if I'd noticed right away, they're not the content they represent on the cover.

I remember one episode where Fred popped off, "There's enuff niggers in here for 3 Tarzan movies"...And the audience HOWLED. Demond Wilson & Lawanda even pretty near cracked up. And it WAS hysterically funny, especially in the context he said it. But now in the oh-so-sanctimonious 2000s, we couldn't POSSIBLY get away w/something so racist, vulgar, blah-blah feckin' blah...More's the pity.

I love all I know about the people from Sanford & Son. I love the down to earth humor and the use of free speech that seemed to me to help bring all people together.

Having words edited from that show and many related things seem to me to be undoing all or much of the progress I thought was happening to bring the races together. The "Spring Bling" spring break event in Riviera Beach is known to be for blacks only to the degree that any white college student I have mentioned that event to respond as though they would be afraid for thier safety at such events.

Obviously I have alot to learn but being denied the great entertainment that the great man known as Redd Fox wanted to give us depresses me.

Great to see it with it's original paint. If it's not original it sure looks to be.

I bet the shop is in California still. I would guess somewhere in East LA. maybe where the riots took place in the '90's.

Sure was. His C.V. also includes playing trumpet in the Basie band, running
A&R for Mercury records, scoring The Pawn Broker, and Mod Squad among
a host of others, studying with the renowned French classical music teacher Nadia Boulanger, running a Big band in Europe which featured Phil Woods
and other heavy weights. By any standard one of this country's musical
giants, and that's not even counting his production credits.
