The control head is one of the heads next to the capstan (motorized pin) and rubber pinch roller that pull the tape through its path.
Most VCRs run at their highest speed (SP for a VHS machine) until they are "told" to slow down by slower-speed control pulses. If you have (or make) an SP-speed test recording on another VCR, it may play at the correct or near-correct speed. But, of course, you need to fix the problem.

Captinclock: On that machine that is running off speed...Makesure the capstan/pinch roller is pinching the tape and controlling it's speed. I've seen rollers loose grip/pinch, and the tape speed became regulated by the take up reel instead of the capstan....The playback was off speed and the video was awefull since the synchronizing system was trying to deal with one of the important elements it controls not responding...

Since you have a separate topic started for your VCR problem, and this topic is really about TUD1's group of VCRs, I will make further comments in your Hitachi discussion.

well it kind of had a little bit to do with this thread because he mentioned that one of his VCRs was having a playback speed issue which is what I'm having with mine and my VCR is a top loader VCR from the early 1980s like some of his VCRs are, so its technically not too far off topic but I can see where you're going with this.
