You guys are the best!!

One side of the diode was open. Replaced it with a couple 1N4005s and it locked right in!

'Oly 'eck old chap. Those are the power supply rectifiers (the originals were the old style 'top hat' silicons). If one of those was open, it woulda played hobb with the B+ and caused various woes.
If the horiz lock is now good and solid, the AFC dual diode (if used) is probably still good. It would be located near the H osc. tube and H osc. coil. It's a little 3-legged potted block as described by DavGoodlin, probably common-cathode type. Since they're selenium, they usually deteriorate and fail prematurely.

Nope, the issue *was* the dual AFC diode, that three legged one. Probably should have been more clear

Well, that dispels the old belief that you gotta use only fast-switching (Schottkey) diodes when replacing the AFC diode with non-selenium types. Learn something new every day.

I'm assuming that the cloth grille on the left hand side of the set is a faux speaker grille?
