69 Zenith 22" B&W metal cabinet

I've never seen a 22" B&W before, I thought there were just 5", 9", 12", 16", 19", and 23" rectangular B&Ws (not counting the tubes with more rounded corners from the 50s). I think at a certain point they started calling the 23" CRTs 22Vs, but this is not one of those. It uses a 22TP4. It's a flatter tube, a much wider deflection angle than the 23" CRTs. 14Z26 chassis, model Z-2213-2

So this worked as found for about an hour, then the horizontal frequency drifted enough that I could no longer compensate with the hold control. At first I thought it was the capacitors across the hold control (they were the tubular type, not ceramics), but swapping them didn't fix it. Then I checked some resistors, and found the problem (circled in the schematic pic below).

I've been running this set for several hours now, and it's been holding up fine. I think I'm just going to blow out all the dust and use it like it is rather than recapping. (It's going to be my new basement watching set.) The electrolytics seem ok, and I've found that those dark red colored tubular caps that are still in this set tend not to go bad like those awful bumblebees (which I always swap out as soon as I see them) or the older paper covered caps.

I have a similar set, metal cabinet, similar to zeniths ubiquitous 19" models and using the same basic chassis with ghe knobs on the side, but the CRT is a size larger than a 19" , but smaller than a 23". Its a great performer, I usaed the built in rabbit ears to watch the 9/11/01 news coverage, free of snow, when none of the modern tvs or vcrs I owned could pick up a single station. At the time I lived in Cass City,Mi, an hour away from the nearest station in Saginaw or Bay City. It has a handle on top, back then if it had handles and fit in a pickup truck a tv was a 'portable'

I think these were billed as 21" sets in ads. Maybe that was after the rules were changed on screen size claims.

This was a not too common set. The chassis is devoted to only
the 21" ( 22" ) size. Both the common 19" & the long lived 14N22
23" sets were totally different. It lasted till I think E line, 5 yrs. The
last ones had detent UHF tuners with 6 presets IIRC and
number tabs. Damn things weighed as much as many 19" color
sets. Another battle ship TV from Zenith. Sales were all to oldsters
that wanted a big B&W without the big foot print of the 23" sets.
IIRC the tubes were all the same as the 19" except they were all 6V.
A nice find.

I might have the owner's manual for that. I have a similar set chassis wise except for the fly and IF (duramodule on mine)....I don't know the screen size though.

Mine has a bad vertical transformer, but a GREAT picture (observed by temporarily using a different trans that would not let me get the linearity anywhere NEAR right).

Most of the tubes were replaced with Sylvania tubes at some point, which is strange because there is no sign that any work was ever done under the chassis.

I had one of the 23" 14N22 sets in the metal cabinet, and this 22" is a lot smaller and lighter, without sacrificing much in tube size. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised they didn't switch entirely over to these and drop the 23".

I put it back together, but I really should have cleaned the contacts in the tuner, I keep having to get up and shake the tuning knob. And here's a pic with the stand.

Zenith still offered the 23" big metal cabinet sets until about 1981 or so (solid state, by this time). Twenty+ years ago, I had a 23" metal solid state Zenith from the late '70's. I wish I still had it because that's the only one I've ever had my hands on and is likely the only one I'll ever have my hands on.

Nice set; they are always fun to work on. I believe that is the same set that I spotted at an estate sale in the Detroit area a few weeks ago.

In the years I've been collecting TV's, I was fortunate enough to find just two of those big 22" portables. Fortunately I still kept both of them, one of which I've had since 1997 and is a model similar yours with the bandswitch tuner and plain tuning dials. I used that set for years as my bedroom TV and never once did it fail.

In 2008, I found a nice deluxe model from 1971 with the spotlight dials and the SGVG turret tuner (photo below). These are my favorite models in the b/w TV category and they're indeed scarce today.

This was that estate sale set. Captainmoody picked it up and I traded him that 62 RCA I had for it. I cleaned the tuner yesterday, and now it really produces a nice picture. I noticed there's a place to hang a remote on the back cover, I wonder if they ever actually made any remote 22" b/w sets? Or even a 22" b/w console? I found this ad which shows this same model, called "The Lamar". It does call it a 21" set.

A strange problem: Intermittent black horiz lines across the screen.

It happens mostly when I haven't used it for a while, it would stop mostly after it warmed up for a few minutes, still doing it occasionally every few minutes for a while, stopping nearly entirely if I left it on for a few hours.

Well yesterday it got worse, and wasn't letting up even after it had been on for a while. So today I didn't use it all day, then put it up on the bench and got out the TV analyst. First injecting a signal into the tuner, bypassing the terminals on the back of the set. It was still doing it, so the problem wasn't the terminals on the back of the set. I then cleaned the IF tube sockets, as I remembered I had a problem with a dirty IF tube socket when I got this set (but didn't remember which one.) That didn't fix it. Cleaned the video out tube socket, brightness, contrast, and AGC controls, none of that fixed it.

So I figured a problem like this is probably caused by something to do with the tuner (in which I had cleaned the contacts this summer), the video IF or output, or maybe the horizontal. I disconnected the wire caring the video signal into the video out tube, and injected the video signal from the TV analyst instead. Now it stopped doing it. So that eliminates the horizontal as the cause of the problem (and the video out tube or anything in-between it and the CRT). I then did the same with each video IF tube (disconnecting the circuitry prior to it and injecting a video IF signal from the TV analyst), starting with the 3rd and going back to the 1st. But it still didn't do it again. Then I went and put the RF signal into the tuner again, and it still wasn't doing it. So it seems I fixed it and I'm not even sure what I did!

The only thing I can think of is that moving things around and soldering and unsoldering on the IF tube sockets fixed it. So I went and resoldered all the connections to the vid IF tube sockets. It's been on for about 1/2 hour now, and is still not doing it. If it still isn't doing it tomorrow morning, I'll put it back together and consider it fixed.

It's still working. That resoldering on the IF tube sockets must have fixed it.

Now that I reconnected it, I notice it's getting a much better picture too. Before I needed to have the brightness and contrast all the way up and the picture was still a bit on the blurry side. I had assumed the CRT was getting weak. But now I'm getting a much better picture, and don't have to have either control all the way up.

I have a Warwick built Sears Silvertone, that uses the 22TP4. The CRT is Sylvania sourced and the set is a hybrid. IIRC, it's a 1974 model.

It's interesting to compare the 22" next to a 19" and a 19V and a 23". I still think it's odd that the 19" was totally replaced by the slightly larger 19V, but that they were still making 23" tubes (calling them 22V) when these 22" tubes (21V) were only 1" smaller, yet with a wider deflection angle it made a 22" set much lighter, less deep, way earlier to move around. I've never seen a console with this tube, but I wonder why they never used them in B&W consoles in the late-60s/ 70s.
