Got another Sears badged Japanese tube color set - Videokarma.org TV - Video

Earlier today I bought a 19" Japanese Sears Color TV/radio set form Wiscojim.

The CRT had a very weak green gun (my other Jap set had the same issue too

), but some rejuvenation brought it in to the good range and close enough (a bit outside but it probably won't get better with more jolts) to the color tracking rectangle that it will probably make a decent picture.

I gave it a variac power up, and results are mixed. I've got hum free audio hiss (no reception, though), the horizontal osc. whines enough for me to know it works, and I hear what I believe is the HV coming up, but the CRT is not lighting. The AM portion of the radio works well but FM is near silent, and the volume pot was so dirty that it was killing audio.

Either there is not as much HV as it sounds like, the CRT bias is bad, or perhaps I forgot to put the CRT socket back on after testing.....It appears to be a series string set so if the latter is the case either there are two strings, or the CRT has a filament transformer.

I did not have time to thoroughly look it over with the back off, but if the caps in it are any indication of maker I'd guess it is a Sanyo.

It is really odd to see a color set with what appears to be the same style single shaft UHF/VHF tuner as some little 9" monochrome portables I have, and a builtin transistor AM/FM radio. Jim said it may be a Hotel set, and I would not be surprised if it was.

Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get it going.

That should be fun project. Those sets are probably a lot scarcer than the big-brand models at this point. 564.xxxxxx is Sanyo, right?

For the heck of it, try cycling the Service switch a few times while watching for some raster indication.

564 is the Sears source number for Sanyo. I have one, only without the radio.
It looks the owner had a lot of trouble with the horizontal and vertical hold. The set really needs a serious recaping. The early Japanese caps and the heat from the tubes, was not a great combination.

If only I knew what Sanyo set it crosses to, I might have service info for it.

Well I'm apparently a bit of a scatterbrain...I did leave the CRT socket unplugged. I reconnected it and got raster and eventually picture and sound.

The tuner was VERY dirty, and it took a lot of coaxing to get that picture....I was able to get the tuner to intermittently pass watchable color along the rest of the set, but not for more than a split second. I can't seem to get decent monochrome video after cleaning the tuner....Some hints of it and sound, but that is it.

I wanted to post more pictures but my camera battery died while I was working on it....Film @ 11.

PS: I'm running Firefox on a Windows 7 laptop. I've used Photo bucket for ~five years and have never had any troubles with it or comments from others that they were having trouble seeing pictures I've posted. I like photobucket enough that I'm not changing hosting (unless they change something in a bad way). Those having trouble should make sure their browsers and security programs are not blocking photobucket or any of it's scripts, and or try viewing them on a different device....It is up to you to make sure your computer is working right with the web, and not up to me to make the web work right with your computer.

A lot of hotel sets had radios built in. Another aoproach some hotels used was to distribute audio of local radio stations over unused Tv channels. i aquired such a set up at a hamfest, 3 AM/Fm mono comercial quality tuners, and 3 audio channel modulators, all early 60s and tube based.

They seem to try to force you to use some silly Flash interface (which is bad for many, many reasons so obviously a poor choice for serving photos to a web audience), so I can't see your photos either.

Can't you just attach them properly to your post on the forum so we can all view them easily from any device?

Photo bucket is not mobile friendly. I keep my devices up to date and all. I work in IT, pretty sure I got that down.

But photobucket has massive amounts of ads, popups that it causes mobile browsers to hiccup. I prefer imgur because it links directly to the original in an unmodified form, just like how photo bucket used to work. Or of course, this forum.

I used to use photobuclet for TEN years. I gave up.

Tom, did you pick that set up at the ARCI Radiofest in Willowbrook? The swap was right by my house, but I wasn't able to get there until Sunday as I was working Sat. My friend Paul shot me a few photos of some of the TV's he found as he was there on Saturday, one being the Sears set as you must have been checking the tube right as he took the photo! LOL!

I used to have the exact same model about 10 years ago, but the radio component on mine didn't work. The radio had it's own little power transformer and it had an open primary. It was an easy fix as I just bought a cheap early 70's sanyo AM FM table radio on ebay which used the same little transformer and that fixed it.

There was also a Portacolor that had some wear and tear but passed. By the time I got there on Sunday morning, most of the vendors had packed up and left, but I did buy a few old electronics books from a guy right before he loaded up and took off. The same guy had a '78 Chromacolor II 19" table set sitting under the table for $25 bucks.

That is like the Portacolor I had years ago..... Different knobs though.... VHF one
isn't even a Portacolor correct knob....

For those new to this whenever you have an open primary on
a Jap power transformer check for a fuse INSIDE it. Usually
not shown the schematic but when you pull the
covers its there. VERY common on low priced audio. I have to wonder
how many were changed for fuses. I know I did a few then saw
one on a schematic. A real eye opener.

That was Tom's Portacolor in your picture. Tom bought his Silvertone TV from me. You bought the books from me, as I was one of the last sellers there on Sunday. Still have the Chromacolor II.
