New broadcast network WOCH 41.1 "The Works"

WOCH channel 41.1 "The Works" in Chicago.

I just stumbled across this new network a few days ago. Seems to be yet another retro TV network. Can't find much info online about it.

NO - not analog - just giving the RF channel used by the station in case that helps someone manually tune to it and add it to their channel list. If you don't know what that's about, just use your automatic channel re-scan to add new channels.

I finally found a little info on this netwrok.

"MGM is reentering the multicast space with a new offering called The Works.

The Works features primarily news product of both the local and national variety, according to an MGM insider, along with feature films from the MGM library, as well as sports and comedy.

The Works launched in recent weeks on stations owned or operated by Titan Broadcast Management in markets that include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas-Ft Worth. The channel reaches 31% of U.S. households, according to the insider.

MGM would not comment publicly on the new venture. Titan did not return calls for comment at press time.

Titan sold four stations to Sinclair in 2013.

The digi-net space is booming, with the likes of movie channels This TV, which MGM cofounded and distributes, and Movies!, which is a partnership between Fox and Weigel; as well as vintage program nets such as Antenna TV and Me-TV fighting for carriage and for viewers."

The only bad thing about new OTA stations is that they have that annoying HD black bar at the top and bottom of the screen. To me that makes it almost unwatchable

I'm not sure what you mean. The only blacks bars I ever see are on the sides for older 4:3 format material.

Maybe it's the converter I'm using? Just about everything has black bars top and bottom.

Any converter box typically has a "zoom" or "format" or "aspect" setting to allow filling the screen. Some will do the same thing for all channels, some will save a different setting for each channel, some may default to a particular setting each time you turn them on.

My Insignia 19" flat-screen TV has a zoom button on the remote which does exactly that (expands the picture, if necessary, to fill the screen). I also found out, purely by accident, that the "record" button on my GE universal remote does the same thing. I use that remote rather than the zoom button on the set's own remote for convenience, since at least one cable channel I watch regularly (USA Network) carries some of its programming in letterbox format. I'm glad I found out about this, as I was getting very tired of having to pull out the original remote every time I wanted to watch USA or any other cable channel that letterboxes its video.

I don't know if "The Works" has any plans to expand its coverage to the Great Lakes region. I also would like someday to see Movies! in my area near Cleveland; Time Warner Cable here does not yet carry the channel. To the contrary, the cable operator has been moving channels from analog to digital tiers of service. Doesn't bother me in the least, as my TV receives most digital channels up to channel 135, so I get the displaced channels (including, in my area, ION TV and WGN America) in spite of their having been moved to digital tiers.

If some stations eventually wind up being moved to channels above 135, I won't see them without a box, of course, but I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it. I don't care much for cable boxes anyway, and will not use one until or unless I absolutely must do so to get any TV reception at all over the cable. Time Warner is in the process of merging or has already merged with Comcast (!), so I guess I shouldn't be surprised if I get a notice in my mail from them soon to the effect that they have moved everything, including local broadcast channels, to digital; however, that will have no effect whatsoever here since my FP TV has a 135-channel clear-QAM cable tuner. My other two analog TVs will in fact need boxes to work at all with TW cable if and when the company moves all channels to digital, vacating analog.

BTW, I can't help wondering what the FCC plans to reassign the old analog TV channels to once they get finished moving all analog NTSC television to digital, and there are no stations whatsoever left on old analog channels 2 through 83. Maybe another FM broadcast band, public service radio expansion, or . . . ? Being an amateur radio operator, I can't help wondering, either, if groups of those old channels could eventually form another amateur band below 70cm. Hams are constantly exploring new RF territory, so this wouldn't surprise me if it comes to pass.

Here's where some of the spectrum went. I assume much of the remaining UHF is used for ATSC broadcasts. Not sure about the VHF spectrum.

"Following the analog switch-off, the FCC has reallocated channels 52 through 69 (the 700 MHz band) for other communications traffic,[12] completing the reallocation of broadcast channels 52–69 that began in the late 1990s. These channels were auctioned off in early 2008, with the winning bidders to take possession of them in June 2009. Four channels from this portion of the broadcast spectrum (60, 61, 68, and 69) will be held for reallocation to public safety communications (such as police, fire, and emergency rescue). In addition, some of the freed up frequencies will be used for advanced commercial wireless services for consumers, such as Qualcomm's planned use of former UHF channel 55 for its MediaFLO service."

There are still stations using the VHF band for their digital signals. We have a local station, WSIU in Carbondale, IL, that's still using their old VHF assignment of channel 8. Although for some odd reason they also have a translator in Carbondale on UHF 40. I suppose the UHF signal carries through the hills of Southern Illinois better?

Anyway, I think the FCC was originally considering re-assigning the channel 5 and 6 frequencies for commercial FM, but I think they decided against it for now.
