Photo and Videos of old TV Sets

Hello,

in the last days, I have placed new photo and videos on the web:

Vintage Television X: General Electrics Locomotive style TV set
This General Electrics tv set was introduced in 1949. It is not sure whether this is model 806 or 807. The set was restored and brought back to working condition. The set is fitted with the 10FP4, a very bright aluminised picture tube without ion trap. AFAIK this was one of the very early aluminised picture tubes. The chassis is not easy to service due to parts hidden deep behind other parts. Due to the round screen, this is one of my favourite tv sets from the 1940s.

Prewar tv set Marconi 707 from 1938

This is a documentation of a very early pre-war tv set, the Marconi 707 from 1938. This was one of the first tv sets with an integrated radio receiver (long wave, middle wave, and short wave), television and radiogram input on one chassis. All functions are working.

Prewar tv set Marconi 707 from 1938 with rewound LOPT and television CRT
The bad line output transformer of the prewar tv set Marconi 707 from 1938 was rewound by Ed Dinning. Now the tv set has full line width and correct linearity. Meanwhile, the radar tube could be replaced by a television tube for improving the picture quality, a courtesy of Steve McVoy. A BBC broadcast from 1936 is on display and a scene from the end of 405 line tv transmission in Britain in 1985.

Kind regards,
Eckhard

First TUBES were round, but the first SETS were square by way of masking off all but the biggest rectangle that could be placed in the center of the circle. All round and pseudo round viewing area sets were more 'marketing gimmick'/'illusion of a bigger picture at the cost of loosing the corners of the picture' than any thing else.

Actually round screen sets give more square inches of viewing area than the same diagonal measure rectangular set. I have both an 8 inch roundie and and 8 inch rectangular and the roundie has a noticeably larger picture.

For comparison... 2 10" round tube GE sets from the late 40s, one with a 4x3 rectangle mask shape, the other with a "double D" treatment... I think most would prefer the larger image size afforded by the later, even though some information in the corners is lost.

Sandy...I miss Eckhard as well, Indeed he was a very "Good Troop".

Screen size of CRTs are measured by diagonal inches not area. I Should have said the illusion of a bigger CRT not the illusion of a bigger image. The image does get bigger, but it comes at the cost of over scanning much of the image off the screen.
