66 motorola 23 inch color
hello all, i just felt like picking someones knowledge on this motorola since getting it to this day i cannot figure what might cause the lines i have on the left side and are about 6 inches long from the bottom up and the lines seem to favor a color each and the convergence is off in that corner which can be seen with scene changes or something crosses that path almost like a few beams are not where they should be. i thought the yoke might be the problem but how to tell without a ring test i dont know. the hv is a bit low and the width was not right or the height but was able to adjust all of that but the controls for those are maxxed to one side so something is not right and i really dont believe its the fly. if i max out the screen control the picture will pull in on the left and will be able to see these lines better and with the control all the way up and having the hv being low the picture of course will wash out.could there maybe be some sort of magnets missing from a spot on the yoke or around that area, as im scraping the bottom here trying to figure this out. i already recapped all the lytics and many hv caps in the horiz section. they say measure hv with the yoke in place then unplug it and measure again i did and plugged in the hv does go up but is it possibe for it to have a very miner short in the yoke to give these types of lines and low hv as well but yet still work nice with good color.

here are 2 pics of the problem with lines, note the left side the line bottom on up there are 2 but this one is visable.

I think what you are seeing are "drive lines" which is an issue with the horizontal section. Some of my B&W sets have a drive control just for the purpose of eliminating them. Sorry I can't be more help, but my troubleshooting library is currently buried under AMC Pacer parts, but at least you have a direction to investigate to.
BTW, that sharp, well defined line in the second pic looks really bad. The HV being low and your maxing out controls could be an indicator that your set is loading down, and could torch some critical HV components. |

I thought damper issues caused problems on the left side of the screen.
Where are the screen controls? You followed the setup in the sams? I find it odd that you have such a sharp picture and full horizontal deflection with low high voltage. That doesnt add up. That picture is way to good for 12kv or whatever you said you have. |

Looks like yoke ringing to me. Check the cap or caps in the yoke's horizontal winding.

Just to be different, to me it looks like a shadow mask problem, like a wrinkle. My mother had a later model RCA console that she bought at a freight salvage and it looked very similiar in a spot on the upper left. Nothing would change it.

well i tried a new damper tube no change and yes it does have a nice picture for the hv to be low, maybe because the crt was replaced in 1980. all the screen controls are in the front and i followed the sams and did the grey set up 3 times.but still to center the picture and to get the correct height and so on these controls are maxed to one side. when i got the set the left side of the screen was not there about 3-4 inches and the height 1-2 inches was off so something is weird here. well motorola was different. i did notice on the yoke about 10 seconds after turning the set on the yoke on the right side had alittle sizzle or static electricty going on but when the hv came up it was gone so i since cleaned that area of the yoke and it dont do that anymore. i thought that may have been an indication of something going on with the yoke. cap in the yoke,ringing, i thought that also,hmmm.... but those lines concentrated to just that side only starting and the bottom. useing the bar gen that left side is wavy and wont converge correctly. crosshatch pattern lines on that side are distorted.

Maybe try tilting the yoke and see if the lines follow it. If it does then diagnose the deflection circuits, If the line stays put then it's the CRT. Just remember to make a mark before you move the yoke!

It sounds like some kind of horizontal problem, and could possibly be a yoke problem (not so common though). I the picture, I see a definite horizontal fold-over line. That's usually a horizontal drive problem, but without looking at a schematic, I can't make any good guesses. Maybe a coupling capacitor near the horizontal output?

where would this coupling cap be or where would it be right off of. or it may be the ceramic disc cap in the yoke? hows the periods now and one question mark,lol,lol.

hey Timmy, since it hasn't really been said yet, the t.v. looks great. The colors look excellent for a 60's Motorola. Once you get to-the-bottom of this drive issue you'll have quite a nice set.

well yes it does work nice and the colors are very good but the quality of the pics i sent dont really show how good it is . but i can probably figure the color is nice because the crt was replaced in 1980.well i hope can get to the bottom of what is going on here.
