Those things are _HEAVY_. I've got a 21" CRT (professional PC monitor, mind you) that I can't even lift by myself. Not so much for the weight as the fact that its shape means you can't lift the thing without either a) having all sorts of edges digging in to your arms and torso, or b) having the center of gravity be just so that it's at risk of tipping out of your hands.
OTOH, if you consider the sheer amount of force involved with a tube that size, there better damn well be a lot of thick glass to keep it contained.
I couldn't begin to imagine the noise one of those tubes would make if it imploded... and you probably wouldn't want to be near it at all.
