Doug, That Quasar looks to be almost identical to the one I had growing up(I'll have to check my old photos, but I'm sure mine didn't have tubes). If you ever want to sell it I'll probably want to buy it(possibly badly).

Nice find! From what I've seen, PB sets of this era were of very high quality. I have a '67 TV-only color console that has basically the same chassis. Mine has some color issues and a CRT with cataracts; but, I think it will be a good one, once I fix it. I also have a '66 PB 19" B&W "Astronaut". This set is also built on a vertical handwired chassis w/ power transformer. On this one, the yoke is missing and the CRT is nearly dead; but, I'd still like to fix it.

I have a '69-'70 PB color console with the same control layout as yours; but, the chassis is the standard PC board based horizontal style.

Towards the end, many PB sets were rebadged GE's, Panasonic's, etc.

I think PB got out of the radio/TV business in '74 and they made one solid state color console during their final year.

PB sets never turn up in my area, either. These were obtained, about 1.5 years ago, when we went to that shop in SC. They were a PB dealer and that's where I found out what I know about PB. I've also been told that the sets from the '67-'68 years are better performers than the stuff from the early '70's.

Doug, here's my '67 PB console. As you can see, the chassis is almost like the one in yours. The biggest difference I see is that yours has a PC convergence board.

That really took some nerve, to ship a Packard-Bell to Chicago! Imagine the poor salesman trying to sell one, versus a Zenith, Admiral, Motorola, Wards, Sears or Wells-Gardner store brand.

Teledyne bought P-B sometime in the 70's - we had a SS Teledyne/P-B Console in the shop for a few months, as we fought a vertical problem, that turned out to be an error in the Sams. Another shop alerted us to the problem, and one transistor later, the problem was fixed. I've got a P-B 19" solid state chassis - er, rather a rebadged Sanyo chassis from a P-B set.

Packard Bell only offered one solid-state console, the Teledyne PB1000, in their last year - 1974. I ran across one a while back but several parts were missing and it looked like the owner was trying to recreate that part of the circuitry using old transformers and God-knows-what from his junk drawer. Needless to say I passed on that one.

Went to a few sales today, picked up a couple color sets. First sale was in La Grange at 633 S. Waiola. Found a 1963 Admiral roundie combo in the basement. Fortunately a dry clean basement so the TV is still in nice shape. The TV doesn't work, won't even power up but the stereo works perfectly. It was half price day, so I got it for $35.00. I had my appliance dolly with me, so I was able to move it by myself as it was basically impossible to get anyone at the sale to help me even if you offer them a few dollars to help. You are better off doing things yourself anyway. I dropped the Admiral off at home before I went to any more sales.
The next sale was in Forest Park at 836 Thomas Ave. I went to check out a Motorola stereo that I saw in the sale preview photos. They wanted $295 for it! I said forget that, but on the otherside of the living room was an unexpected 1969 Zenith color set! Not too often do I find full to the floor consoles. They took nice care of this one. It's a Zenith so you know what that means... works just fine... Looks like nobody ever serviced it either, no evidence of wear around the twist tabs on back. Its a 16Z7C50 chassis. Another one of those strange situations I run into wondering how a TV lasts that many years in the living room of a small home and go untouched.

I have the cheapest version of that Admiral (metal table model), it was their first in-house color chassis. Mine has some hard to figure out HV regulator issues which I don't think were uncommon, judging by some old tech articles I found.

Doug, you ought to get yourself a trailer. This Feb. I got an 8 foot X 5 foot single axle with a folding ramp brand new from a trailer dealer. You can fold the ramp down and pull the dolly right up it. I went to some estate sales this weekend and used the trailer hitched to the Grand Marquis to haul a console phonograph and large speaker cabinet. It is even better than a truck with a Tommy Lift and lets you never have to lift or turn equipment up to or inside a pickup bed again.

Towing with a big car is great as you have a low center of gravity and can easily keep an eye on the load in the rear view mirror. After having lifted upright pianos and washing machines in a pickup bed I vowed this year to myself I would never load equipment like that in a pickup truck again and risk hurting myself and have kept that promise!

Garage sales are pretty big right now in the Chicago suburbs as well. I was driving by one when I saw late-1970's Zenith with the single varactor tuner and electronic tuning. I just had to buy it for $15. It works fine, but I can only pick up VHF Channel 6 from my house. The previous and most likely original owners told me that if it didn't work, it wouldn't be out for sale and instead be in the trash. They were able to pick up an additional channel or two based on their location. It was strange though because I live only about 10 minutes from them and I can't pick up those channels. I will post pictures as soon as I can find my camera.

By the way, that 1969 Zenith looks great in that house. It's too bad that their selling it, but at least it's going to a good home.

A sale at 7733 W. Montrose Avenue, Norridge, IL. It was posted in the B&W forum.

Came away with a trio of 21" round color tubes, a pair of Zenith roundies, a bunch of test equipment, and a huge wall poster with an entire year's worth of Zenith sets on it. The poster must have been a dealer thing, it's huge!

THAT is where your "haul" was? Wow, I used to live less than a mile from there, until I moved here to California. I still have family in the Chicago area.

You got a nice collection from that sale.
