I think the clue here is what design / part change Sony made to there TV's after 1990.

At least to me, it seemed like every sony had significant chassis changes, while alot of it remained the same as well....

I agree with Charles, you can't mandate or design in common sense. On the overseas list, there is a swath of US models. Notice that a lot of these aren't on the US list.

Before 1990...a LOT of Sony sets were "hot", in regards to the power supply, (like my little 1985 model KV-1371 sitting behind me with RTV on it right now), and they liked to used a pretty big series resistor in them in the power supply and a series regulator. It MUST be something like that. The flyback of course could do this--but the 90-on sets did NOT change the fly's by that much---if in any significant way. However...MANY of them were then "cold" with a switching power supply.

If I remember right, I have changed a number of convergence blocks in that era set(s). The block cracks and can arc to the point of burning its plastic housing.
It was mounted on the side of the CRT shield. |

I picked up a KV1473RWP at a thrift shop a couple years ago. It appears to mid 80's design. Dont know where it came from, but it says on the front " TRINITRON AUTOVOLTAGE" It definitely was made for a foreign market.

I worked on tons of 20/25XBR's when i worked for Sony. never saw any lawsuits or units exploding into flames

They said due to the age deterioration of this certain part, it might cause a fire. If Sony will ever say what this part is, people who are good with working on TV's should be able to just change the part out for a new one unless it's a special part.
I know my '84 sony Trinitron has a slight convergence problem in the lower left hand corner of the picture. It might need a new convergence block?

it was called an HVR block. to adjust convergence. it caused intermittent shut down. ususally the crack was on the bottom. thye were money makers
