1975 Zenith 23" metal cabinet b/w

He's asking more than I would pay for it, especially with that $137 shipping added in, but until I saw this I didn't know Zenith made the metal cabinet b/w sets this late. Says it uses the 22FB12 chassis. This is the first example I've ever seen of a solid state Zenith b/w in a metal cabinet. (I believe the seller is correct when he says that chassis is ss, but I don't have a schematic of that one here to check to be sure)

Back in the early '90's, an old man gave me a set that looked almost like this except I think it was a '77 model. The CRT was so dim that it could only be seen in a dark room. It did come back after I hit it with my old B&K 465 rejuvenator. That was back when any used TV that worked was worth selling and I think I sold mine for $40. Wish I still had it and I've never seen another one since. I suspect that any Zenith steel cabinet SS B&W would be rare as heck.

That used to be my tv. I gave that TV to duane about 3 years ago, hes got tons of old color sets. I sold him some sets that I put on ebay and when he came to pick them up, he really wanted that zenith B+W. Its a "G" series model number which places it as a 1976. You might find a post about it in the old estate sales threads back in 2005 or 2006. I remember I picked it up in Berwyn for dirt cheap something like $5.00, it still had the cart which I see he is not offering for sale. I might like to have it back but $174 is rediculous considering I gave it to him for free.

How do the model numbers work with the chassis number to determine the year? I thought because it was the 22FB12, the 'F' means it was 1975.

My 23" b/w in the metal cabinet is a 14N22 chassis, which would be 1966? But the sams is 1095, which puts it in 1970, and it looks more like a 1970 to me too.

That's a very interesting set... That tube cap is a throwback to the 50s! I say it was a commercial-use set; maybe school/motel? I remember seeing a handful of Packard-Bell 27" metal cased B&W solid state sets in the Los Angeles City schools, which were branded "Laars"; a Teledyne-Packard Bell sub-brand. Ironically, I think Laars is the only remnant of the old Packard-Bell TV company still around. They make pool heaters now.

If I saw this set locally and it was in decent shape, I MIGHT go $40 or $50 on it, depending on my mood for that day. Besides a TV collector, he'd be lucky to get anything for that set.

You are correct that its a 1975 chassis model, but the first figure in the model number identifiys the model year for the TV. "G" being a 1976 model. In cases like the 14N22, it is indeed a 1966 chassis model, but zenith continued to produce it in their cheaper B+W consoles up until around 1972. Your zenith console that uses the 14N22 probably has an "A" as the first figure of the model number if its a 1970 model, or "B" if its a '71. Zenith did the same thing with radios. I've seen some "N" series chassis being used up until Zenith's very last tube radio (the Z316 for 1969). Basically, the chassis never changed from the original design and they just kept producing it but putting it in different cabinets and as sets are sold each year, they update the model number so its model year can be identified.

Yeah...I would LOVE to have this. I have ONE set with the same chassis, in an "ordinary" 19" cabinet, a flea mkt find, from years a go.

BUT..nearly $300 for the set and ship?? I paid LESS for my CTC5, with a GOOD tube!! I KNOW that set is NOT that big or heavy--to cost that much to ship to Cincy!!
