I'm really fighting back powerful urges to email this seller and ask them what drugs they are on.

This set is almost identical to the '67 Silvertone Suburbanite B&W console that I'm working on for a friend. I'll bet he'd part with it for $10K.

OK, I couldn't hold back any longer and sent them the following message. I tried to be polite.

"I've been repairing TV's and radio's for many years and that set is not from 1956. It's actually from the mid-to-late '60's. And, I don't mean to be rude or critical; but, $10K? May I ask why such a high price? It's not like these are that rare and are usually lucky to bring $5 or $10 in non working condition; but, I do wish you the best of luck."

Actually, this is in "error in finding the error". True, UHF wasn't compulsory until 1964, but all-channel sets did exist from 1952 onwards. They weren't very common, unless you were in an all-UHF market, like Fort Wayne, Peoria, Fresno or Yakima (note that these are fairly small markets). In most areas, if you wanted an all-channel set to watch the lone independent or NET station, you had to buy your TV sight-unseen, from a catalog, which many people were not willing to do.

Yes, everything else about the set clearly screams mid-1960's (no set in my 1963 or 1969 SR catalogs looks just like it, it's between these years), and the auction would have ended with no bids if the last four zeros had been taken out of the minimum.

One other thought, Warwick was almost as greedy as this auctioneer when it a built this set with a huge speaker grille concealing a teeny-weeny speaker!

For grins, here is a little history of the first commercial UHF station KPTV ch 27 in Portland Oregon:
