Drake 2B Problems

My brother-in-law tells me that he is having problems with his "mini-boat anchor", a Drake 2B... The 20 and 40 Meter bands quit working. I suspect that the crystals are weak. Any ideas? Where can one buy new crystals for this 40+ year old radio?

thanks,
jr

Yeah- Google "RL Drake Parts", go to the 1st hit, Drake Internet Resources, & there are like 4 crystal suppliers listed about halfway down the page.

Don't know about Drakes...

but my Hallicrafters SX-117 has a crystal for every band. If, when aligning the receiver, you pull the frequency very far from the native frequency of the crystal, the crystal will stop oscillating and you'll lose the band.

I suggest that you go to " mailman.qth.net " and select the button, "Directory of Lists" on the left. On the resulting list, page down to "Drake", select it and follow instructions to register on the Drake reflector.

There you will find many helpful hams who own and are expert in the repair of Drake equipment. They might save you from buying expensive crystals that you don't need.
