SONY Bravia in a skip.
Hi,
There's a very modern Sony flat screen TV at the local dump. Apparently it fell off its stand and is an insurance write off. The glass screen is very badly damaged with a hard impact mark in the middle and radial cracking all over (looks more like it's been hit with something hard than fell on something soft). Is the glass screen on these TVs just a shield, or is there circuitry directly behind it that's likely ruined? It's a big screen (between 4 and 5 ft diagonal; didn't want to show too much interest by measuring it) and has all manner of logos on it including HD. Retrieving it would involve a night raid on the place; DIY salvage is strictly against the law these days but skip diving is an honorable tradition in Kirriemuir.......

If it's an LCD set and the panel is broken, the cost of the panel alone will exceed the cost of a new set. Funny how the markup on replacement parts does that. Plus add in the labor cost to replace the busted panel. That's likely why it's in the dump. Probably some good boards (digital process, power supply) could be salvaged from it which could be of some value to a shop that repairs them. Spare boards come in handy sometimes.

Once it's in the recycling site it becomes the property of the local Council. What they do with it is anyone's guess (probably ship it to China so 9 year old kids can strip out the copper and drop everything else in a hole). ED in TX. I guess stripping to re-use the bits requires more knowledge than I have; just had another look at it and its an LG, not a Sony. Screen size is 4 ft diagonal. Damage to glass isn't as bad as I first thought but unless it's just a matter of taking the case apart and replacing the glass it's beyond me. My guess is it's an insurance write off from a customer with a 'new for old' policy.
