AWA c3414 deep image colour

Got one of these (NZ$10. so not a bad deal)

Anyway, it has one of the clicky tuners with a knob from 0 to 11 and U for the UHF.

Problem is that the tuning on those presets is all wrong. There is a knob in the middle of the clicky selector that seems to change the tuning but it doesnt go all the way to get me some channels.

Is it possible to retune these presets on it somehow by swapping components out or whatever to get it recieving all the channels that it should? I have a couple of modulators that are up on cable channels which I would like to be able to get on it if possible but thats not a major at the moment.

I'm assuming your located in New Zealand as you quoted the price of the TV in NZ dollars. If thats the case, is your TV Australian or New Zealand made? The TV station frequency allocation is quite different between the two countries, so if you had an Australian market set its tuner would be set up wrong for NZ.

It may be possible to retune the presets further than you can with the fine tuning knob. Some rotary tuners have screw adjustments in the tuner to preset its frequency. I'm not sure if yours has this facility. I'll look into it some more.

I'm quite surprised that the AWA C3414 still has rotary tuning as this is a fairly late model (mid 1980's at a guess) set.

Yeah, it has UHF which I made sure of before buying it, but while there is still stuff on the VHF I would like to use it. I think it is an aussie one since the ones sold here had a blank plate inplace of the UHF tuner since there was none here at the time. And it has a channel 0 and 1 which are not used in NZ.

It has a warning on it about a live chassis so I am a bit hesitant to open it up without an isolation transformer, and those are rare as now. (well cheap used ones that is)

Channels 3 4 and 7 okish - but the tuning control needs to be tweeked between them somewhat, and UHF is good as gold. I am getting almost perfect UHF reception without an antenna since I am assuming the tuners in these are rather poorly shielded.

I've done a bit of further research. The AWA should receive NZ channels 4-11 perfectly as long as you remember that the channels are named differently. NZ channels 1 to 3 probably won't be received properly as the frequency allocations are 1 to 2 MHz off. The tuner can't be adjusted for this unless the fine tuning has enough range to cope.

Hmm, well its not getting C4 which is on channel NZ ch9 which should be on 10 on the dial, and TV3 which is on NZ ch7 comes thru on 9 on the selector on the tv.

But I did speak to someone who repaired tv's in the 80s who said there were lots of these that came over that had to have something in the tuner swapped out to change the spacing and that the way they did it was such that the numbers went totally wrong - probably whats happened to this one since they are all wrong on it. He was only starting at the repair place when the old guy that did them retired so didnt know any more really.

Not a major, I picked up a VHF modulator on trademe so I can drive it off that if the need arrises. Luckily the UHF control goes low enough to get all my modulators that I already have but one so its lookign alright for usability as a garage tv
